SUMMARY:
Barge Properties is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Financial Controller to oversee all accounting, financial reporting, and budgeting functions for the company and its managed entities.
The ideal candidate is a strategic, hands-on leader with a solid background in real estate and property management accounting. This role is responsible for ensuring financial accuracy, process improvement, and compliance while providing insightful analysis and guidance to executive leadership.
The Controller will play a key role in maintaining the financial integrity, operational efficiency, and long-term growth of our multifamily, self-storage, and development divisions.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Lead and manage the accounting team responsible for all core accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
- Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple entities in accordance with owner and lender requirements.
- Consolidate financial data across operating companies, partnerships, and development projects.
- Manage the annual budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with property managers and executive leadership.
- Oversee cash flow management, banking relationships, and debt compliance reporting.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and internal control policies.
- Supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and professional growth.
- Partner with ownership and executive leadership to provide strategic financial insights and recommendations that drive profitability and efficiency.
- Oversee the preparation of year-end reports and coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors for timely and accurate filings.
- Manage the property tax process, including coordination with consultants during appeals and litigation.
- Prepare accurate personal financial statements for executive leadership.
- Evaluate and implement accounting systems, process improvements, and technology solutions to enhance reporting accuracy and operational efficiency.
- Support real estate acquisitions, dispositions, and development projects with financial modeling, due diligence, and reporting.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or advanced degree preferred).
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or controller-level role with team personnel oversight.
- Proven ability to manage a team, including roles such as Assistant Controller, Accounts Payable, and Payroll.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and real estate/property management accounting principles.
- Experience with tax accounting and preparation of reports for CPA review and tax filings.
- Proficiency in managing accounting for multiple entities and intercompany transactions.
- Experience with property management accounting software such as AppFolio, Yardi, or QuickBooks.
- Advanced Excel and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize data into actionable insights.
- Strong leadership presence with a collaborative, hands-on approach.
WORK HOURS & LOCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- This position requires full-time, on-site presence at our Temple, TX offices (76502)
- The standard schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm.
