Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) has an immediate opening for a Systems Administrator/Dev Ops Engineer, at our Headquarters in Waimea (Kamuela), Hawai'i, USA.

Main Responsibilities & Core Duties
A day in the life of the System Administrator/Dev Ops Engineer at CFHT will include the standard network maintenance, monitoring and user support while also updating a very diverse IT infrastructure across multiple locations. Due to the age and complexity of our systems, we have a diverse environment of operating systems and technologies. We need someone with the willingness to integrate into a cross functional team to effect meaningful change in our IT systems and operations.

Technical Skills & Expertise
To be successful in this position, you should have the following:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience in systems administration in a multi-OS environment.
- Expertise in physical and virtual network design, including segmentation (VLANs, subnets) and isolation (firewalls, DMZs).
- Hands-on experience with virtualization and containerization for production environments.
- Strong knowledge of SAN, NAS, and RAID configurations.
- Strong knowledge of cybersecurity, including SIEM tools, firewall management, and vulnerability assessment.
While not necessary to bring to the role immediately, the following skills are an added plus. If you don't have them yet, this role will give you an opportunity to add them to your resume:
- Experience managing legacy systems and planning migrations to modern platforms.
- Proficiency in cloud platforms and hybrid cloud architectures for SaaS integrations.
- Advanced database administration skills in high-availability configurations.
- Experience with CI/CD pipeline management in a production environment.
- Familiarity with scientific computing environments, particularly in astronomical research or data-intensive applications.
- Prior leadership experience leading complex IT projects.
Work Schedule and Availability
The position typically has a Monday through Friday work schedule, based in the Waimea headquarters. However, it will require periodic travel to the observatory at the summit of Maunakea at 14,000 ft elevation, and on rare occassions weekend and holiday work. There is an expectation of this position, as with all staff, to provide technical support and troublshooting assistance at night when observatory system failures, outages and other serious faults occur.
After a six month introductory period, we do offer partially-remote work options of no more than 2 days per week with the approval of management based on the needs of the company.
