The Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Superintendent provides technical leadership and supervisory oversight for all instrumentation and electrical activities for the Instrumentation and Electrical Department. This position ensures the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of plant systems by supervising I&E technicians and electricians, driving equipment reliability, maintaining quality critical and safety critical instrument inspections and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.

This position is responsible for ensuring plant policies and procedures comply with all generally accepted good engineering practices outlined in applicable codes as well as compliance with all government regulations; the development and execution of an overall E&I departmental strategy to improve the overall E&I reliability and performance; monitoring crew performance, providing problem analysis for equipment history, submitting accurate reports of work execution, taking appropriate action in response to emergencies, and administering company policies as they relate to assigned personnel.

The overall team environment will include instrument and electrical technicians, maintenance technicians, maintenance planners, maintenance supervision, reliability engineers, and operations personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Directly supervise I&E technicians, providing technical guidance, work prioritization, provide scheduling input and performance management.
  • Ensuring that proper calibration, installation, troubleshooting, and repairs of process instrumentation (flow, pressure, level, temperature, analytical) are performed correctly, timely, and in an efficient manner. Reporting or recording same as directed.
  • Ensuring that the quality critical and safety critical instruments are kept up to date with inspection frequency.
  • Ensuring that feedback from technicians on work orders is adequate for history documentation.
  • Lead for ISO Audits for instrumentation.
  • Maintaining loop number assignments.
  • Scale certifications point contact.
  • Maintaining standing instrument contract agreements.
  • Ensuring that plant equipment is fully operational and critically maintained in accordance with procedures.
  • Diagnosing faults with defective equipment and ensuring that all work is adequately monitored, safely carried out, and fit for purpose.
  • Reviewing the quality of information in the maintenance database such that the information contained is technically valid, accurate and up to date.
  • Review and maintain up-to-date documentation, including loop drawings, electrical schematics, and calibration records.
  • Lead root cause analyses (RCA) failures of instrumentation systems and implement long-term corrective measures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve asset reliability, control system performance, and energy efficiency.
  • Develop and refine preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, incorporating condition monitoring and reliability engineering principles.
  • Partner with engineering and operations to evaluate new technologies and implement system upgrades.
  • Maintaining a close working relationship with Production Supervisors.
  • Ensuring that adequate spare parts for the I & E Mission are available.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and professional development within the I&E team and that all work complies with NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA, and plant safety standards.
  • Additional duties may vary.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Automation, or related discipline; or equivalent industrial experience.
  • 7+ years in industrial, plant and/or chemical manufacturing environment.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience including electrical and instrumentation maintenance troubleshooting.
  • Advanced knowledge of industrial instrumentation, control systems (PLC/DCS), and electrical systems up to 480V (higher voltage experience preferred).
  • Strong understanding of P&IDs, loop diagrams, motor control circuits, and instrumentation standards (ISA, IEC).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage priorities, and deliver measurable improvements in reliability and safety.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes.
