Job Summary
Provides pre-operative, operative and post-operative patient care, under the direction and supervision of the attending surgeon and in accordance with the objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital and the state Physician s Assistant Act,
Participates in student and patient education
Requirements
- Graduate of an AMA accredited physician assistant program and licensed by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners,
- BLS, ACLS certification
- Prior experience in the management of patients with Open Heart Surgery highly desirable,
- May begin entry level without experience,

Job Specific Requirements
- Complete individual daily or participate in multidisciplinary rounds with attending physician on all inpatients and documentation of medical plan
- Obtain patient histories and performing physical examinations
- Manage discharge of patients with appropriate disposition, follow up planning, adjunctive therapy management and education
- Prepare patients for surgery, including but not limited to counseling in preventive care, medical problems, exercise the use of prescribed treatments and drugs, skin preparation & health promotion
- Orders and evaluates pertinent diagnostic tests in accordance with protocols
- Able to interact with coworkers, patients, staff to instill confidence and facilitate communication and work in a team environment
- Ability to identify normal and abnormal findings and initiate appropriate follow-up and effectively communicate with others those results
- Safely performs clinical procedures such as but not limited to removal of invasive drains, catheters, monitoring devices, pacing wires, PA catheters, chest tubes, and suturing minor wounds
- Participate in call responsibilities for operating room coverage
- Able to complete last years goals and objectives
- Dictate consultations and discharge summaries in a timely manner
- Write appropriate postoperative orders including general and specific nursing care, respiratory therapy and ventilator settings, medications, including inotropes, laboratory and radiologic studies
- Enhances professional growth an development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops
- Services as a resource for nursing and ancillary staff with regards to patient disease management and post operative course,
- Maintains BLS, ACLS certification and provides emergent medical intervention as needed until physician arrives
- Participates in formulating, interpreting, implementing, and evaluating obives, policies, and procedures and maintains current knowledge in the field of practice and informs staff of changes
- First assist in all cardiothoracic cases
- Excision and harvesting of saphenous vein and radial artery in preparation for coronary bypass both open and endoscopically
- Participate in preoperative-postoperative, quality assurance and morbidity and mortality conferences
- Closure of sternotomy, thoracotomy, leg and abdominal wounds
- Fulfills required annual clinical hospital related competencies
