GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
An employee in this position performs routine work associated with sorting and delivering inter-departmental mail, delivering supplies and materials to various schools, departments, US Post Office, State Courier Mailbox, NC DPI and other locations as needed. Job responsibilities also include picking up hazardous materials and disposing of them according to established procedures. The courier must be able to adjust his schedule to work outside the usual workday as needed. In addition he or she must be able to report to work when inclement weather exists.
Work is performed according to prescribed schedules and procedures with detailed instructions for each new or unusual task. Work is performed under direct supervision and is evaluated through observation and conferences in terms of the overall timeliness and efficiency of duties performed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNTIONS
- Sorts and distributes inter-departmental mail and supplies.
- Makes deliveries and special distribution trips as required to schools and school system departments.
- Assists in unloading supplies and materials and stocking warehouse.
- Performs related work as required.

Performs other related work as required
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Some experience in routine clerical or messenger work or related field. Demonstrated ability to read and write and perform basic mathematical functions. Completion of high school preferred; or an equivalent combinaton of experience and training.
- Some knowledge of basic clerical practices and procedures.
- Ability to gather and sort mail and office memos.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and tools including handtrucks, sign presses, etc.
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are those for Medium Work. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must possess the visual acuity to read data and figures.
