Trailer Repair Technician

Trailer Repair Technician 

The trailer technician will perform a variety of welding and fabrication functions. Perform difficult welding operations of aluminum and steel for complex, precision assemblies involving high strength welds. Plan and layout welding sequence, referring to drawings, blueprints or specifications. May layout and mark weld points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates. May position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, or guides using measuring instruments and hand tools. Operate welding equipment, regulate current and voltage or gas and wire flow rate for proper penetration and fusion of metals. Obtain maximum weld strength, avoiding distortion and excessive weld at joints. May provide technical direction to others.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform welding (GMAW) on steel, stainless steel, and aluminum materials to repair or modify trailer structures.
  • Use hand and air power tools (grinders, impact gun, floor jacks, etc.) to repair mechanical components.
  • Conduct inspections and repairs on hydraulic and electrical systems
  • Read and interpret work orders and blueprints to complete repairs according to specifications.
  • Cut and shape metal using shears, plasma cutters, and saws to fabricate or modify parts related to truck and trailer bodies.

Required Education, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude, with an emphasis on repair and maintenance.
  • Welding experience, with the ability to pass on-site welding tests (GMAW).
  • Ability to read and accurately measure using a tape measure down to 1/16th.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; ASE Certification preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, carrying out work in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, safety rules, work orders, and written directions.


Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to communicate clearly
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. 
  • Requires ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, crawl, and kneel 
  • Specific vision ability required includes close, distance, color, and peripheral vision with depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  

Work Environment:

Manufacturing work environment that has frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, noise intensity level, proximity to moving mechanical parts and exposure to weather.
