Assistant Coach - Rugby (Part-Time) Position Summary
The Assistant Coach – Rugby supports all aspects of the Bishop O’Dowd High School Rugby program to ensure the highest quality of spiritual, social, physical, and intellectual growth for every student-athlete. While serving as an assistant coach, this position will have lead coaching responsibilities on the field, including running practices, directing game play, and guiding player development in alignment with the school’s mission and values.
Assistant Coach - Rugby (Part-Time) Reporting Responsibilities
Reports directly to the Varsity Rugby Head Coach.
Hired, supervised, and evaluated by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the Principal.
Assistant Coach - Rugby (Part-Time) Major Responsibilities
Uphold and model a spiritual and moral code consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and Bishop O’Dowd High School’s charism.
Integrate the school’s mission and Catholic identity into the coaching-learning process of the Rugby program.
Serve as an on-field lead coach, responsible for directing practices, match strategy, and in-game decision-making when assigned.
Implement current coaching methods to maximize player development in rugby-specific skills, conditioning, and game tactics.
Attend and contribute to coaching staff meetings.
Assist in developing the master practice and match schedule in consultation with the Director of Athletics.
Represent the program at league preseason and postseason rugby meetings when the Head Coach is unavailable.
Regularly attend athletic department events and meetings as required.
Ensure compliance with Bishop O’Dowd, league, section, and state athletic policies and bylaws.
Support student-athletes in the college recruitment process when applicable.
Oversee the distribution, collection, and care of program equipment, uniforms, and related gear.
Foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all student-athletes.
Demonstrate cultural competence in working with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds, races, genders, and ethnicities.
Additional Duties
Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes and parents.
Teach rugby fundamentals, techniques, and strategies appropriate to players’ skill levels.
Condition athletes for endurance, strength, and agility required for rugby competition.
Prioritize sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and respect in all activities.
Maintain a safe and organized practice and game environment.
Assist with equipment management and facility preparation.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Rugby playing experience and/or deep knowledge of the sport required.
Previous coaching experience at the high school or college level is preferred.
First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
USA Rugby coaching certification or willingness to obtain.
Availability for after-school hours, weekends, and some off-season meetings and duties.
Physical Demands
Ability to stand, walk, run, and demonstrate rugby techniques for extended periods.
Frequent reaching, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment
Outdoor field environment with varying weather conditions.
Occasional travel for matches and tournaments.
