Description

Primary Function

The BA Degreed Teacher is to provide a safe, healthy, and nurturing learning environment that fosters children’s growth and development in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards.

Duties
  • Implement the daily education program, utilizing the selected curriculum and following the guidance of the Head Start Program Performance Standards and TDFPS Minimum Standards for Child Care Centers.

 

  • Responsible for completing and maintaining each individual child’s educational records to include anecdotal observations, individual child education plans, screenings, assessments, collection of children’s work samples.

 

  • Implementation of the daily educational program utilizing the selected curriculum and following the guidance of the Head Start Program Performance Standards and TDFSP Minimum Standards for Child-Care centers.

 

  • Maintaining a portfolio for each child, including observations, examples of the child’s work, and developmental assessments.

 

  • Cooperate with other staff and classroom groups to maintain the smooth functioning of the center, which at time may require changes to meet the needs of the children

 

  • Develop and follow written lesson plans and activities following the classroom’s curriculum.

 

  • Collaborate with teacher’s assistant/aide to plan and prepare materials needed to implement the curriculum.

 

  • Conduct small group and whole group instruction on a daily basis.

 

  • Set up and maintain learning centers on a daily basis.

 

  • Use the playground as an extension of the classroom; assures that the playground is safe

 

  • Provide a supportive learning environment that will promote children’s learning in all areas of development.

 

  • Provide for the development of skills through a variety of age-appropriate activities that nurture and support the six areas of emergent literacy.

 

  • Work closely with staff/parents in preparation for children’s activities and agency events.

 

  • Work in collaboration with parents to implement an educational program that will support children’s learning and development.

 

  • Conduct home visits and parent conferences as scheduled.

 

  • Implement CLASS guidelines.

 

  • Implement all nutritional and health related activities.

 

  • Implementation of positive guidance techniques to include redirecting children’s unacceptable behaviors and reinforcing desire positive behaviors.

 

  • Participate in family style meal service during all meals provided to the children.

 

  • Serve as primary contact and referral service for both parents and content area staff relating to the child’s overall well being.

 

  • Responsible for administering all screenings and assessments for each child.

 

  • Responsible for implementing the Individual Education Plans under the guidance of Special Services staff.

 

  • Responsible for supervision of children under care at all times.

 

  • Maintain positive relationships with children, staff and parents at all times.

 

  • Carry out the daily classroom activities.

 

  • Maintain a healthy, safe and orderly learning environment.

 

  • Work with children with special needs, different ethnic or cultural backgrounds or language.

 

  • Implement positive guidance techniques to include redirecting children’s unacceptable behaviors and reinforcing desired positive behaviors.

 

  • Maintain child/staff ratio at all times and follow shift change procedures and arrival/departure activity plans.

 

  • Review performance data and obtain training to enhance performance of duties.

 

  • Maintain supply and material inventory needed to carry out a daily comprehensive early education program.

 

  • Will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

  • Reporting Child Abuse – Responsible to report child abuse and neglect or suspected child abuse and neglect in accordance with the policy set forth in the PCI Employee Handbook, Head Start Performance Standards, and applicable state laws regarding child abuse.

 

  • Confidentiality of Information – Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of information pertaining to children, families, and staff as outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards, and PCI Employee Handbook.

 

  • Code of Conduct – Responsible to abide by all standards of conduct as outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards, and PCI Employee Handbook
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and comprehension of all aspects of the Head Start Program Performance Standards, and TDFPS Minimum Standards for Child Care Centers. 

 

  • Ability to interpret and implement all standards and guidelines as they pertain to the Early Childhood Development Program, CACFP, TDFPS Minimum Standards and the Head Start Performance Standards.

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.  Ability to relate sensitively to preschool children. 

 

  •  Ability to plan, evaluate, make intelligent decisions and handle crisis.

 

  • Ability to work with individuals with special needs, different ethnic or cultural backgrounds or language.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a child development center environment.
  • Moderate walking, standing, stooping, sitting, kneeling, bending and twisting, pushing/pulling, overhead reaching/reaching and keyboarding.
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek, work late and/or on weekends.
  • Subject to visual acuity, speech/hearing, hand/eye coordination, and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to lift 5 -10 pounds frequently, 10 – 50 pounds occasionally, more than 50 pounds infrequently

Qualifications


Education and Experience

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field.  Related field is a Baccalaureate or advanced degree with a program of study that includes 21 hours more courses in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.  Requires experience working with preschool children for a minimum of one (1) year.
