SUMMARY: The Maintenance Technician I is responsible for assisting in all facets of building and grounds maintenance for the Prairie Island Indian Community as directed by the Public Works Manager, under direction of the Director of Public Works & Infrastructure. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.

  • Provides general maintenance services in the Community Center, Administration Building, Elders Building and PSB Building including washing, stripping and waxing floors, washing and sanitizing all bathrooms, vacuuming and shampooing carpets and washing and painting walls as necessary. Also, clean offices, including but not limited to dusting, and emptying waste receptacles
  • Can be asked to provide routine painting and repairs of all buildings, including repairs to heating and air conditioning equipment, appliances that does not require a license.
  • Performs maintenance of all tribal roads, including snow removal, snow plowing, sanding, minor road repairs and the removal of snow of all driveways of tribal member elders and tribal members whom are disabled and live on or near the reservation.
  • Lawn mowing as necessary to keep roadsides, ditches and other areas mowed and clear of debris.
  • Maintains the grounds including grass cutting, pulling weeds, picking up waste and trash, emptying trash barrels, etc.
  • General maintenance for all vehicles and mowers and performs those tasks that do not require specialized expertise
  • Understand maintenance & operations policies and procedures to assure adherence to health and safety standards
  • Assist with washing windows on a monthly basis, or more often as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Good people and organizational skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Ability to work varied hours when necessary
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work well within the existing team and government structure
  • Sensitive to Native American Culture
  • Must pass drug screen (UA) and a criminal background check
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commercial Driver’s license (CDL)


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: *

  • Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Must have ability to operate farm equipment, tools, plows, and trucks
  • Must be physically fit to do heavy type farm work.
  • Must be able to walk, stand or sit for long periods throughout the day
  • Must be able to push, pull and grasp objects routinely
  • Must be able to bend and crouch frequently
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions



REQUIRED TRAINING:

  • Harassment training
  • Any position-related training as determined by department manager



WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed property-wide (indoors and outdoors) and may include excessive noise, such as power tools, dust and fumes from paints, varnishes, stains and the like and exposure to extreme weather conditions
