About this job
Job Description
Opening Overview
We are excited to present a remarkable opportunity for a Board Eligible or Board Certified General Surgeon at an esteemed community-based hospital in the scenic region of east-central Vermont. This position offers the chance to utilize and hone your surgical skills in a supportive environment that prioritizes quality care, employee engagement, and job satisfaction. Nestled in a charming town along the Connecticut River, this opportunity is perfect for those seeking a balance between professional fulfillment and a high quality of life, with easy access to major cities like Boston just a short drive away.
Opportunity Highlights
- Competitive base salary of $400k, with wRVU incentives.
- Sign-on bonus and relocation reimbursement available, tailored to individual needs.
- On-call compensation of $1500 per day for calls exceeding the standard requirement.
- Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
- Peaceful, rural setting with a high quality of life and easy access to urban amenities.
Practice Setting and Clinical Scope
This role is based in a small, rural hospital where you will have the opportunity to work primarily on solo coverage, supported by a dedicated medical team. The hospital handles a busy ER with approximately 18,000 visits annually, though trauma cases are rare. The surgical case mix includes routine procedures such as gallbladders, hernias, appendectomies, and bowel surgeries, along with roughly 100 endoscopies per month. The absence of a Gastroenterologist means General Surgeons complete their own endoscopies, providing a broad scope of practice. Patients are typically aged 16 and older, with no pediatrics.
Schedule and Assignment Details
The position offers a desirable four-day work week from Monday to Thursday, with flexibility for weekend call adjustments. Surgeons working weekend call will receive Thursday off, working Friday through Sunday instead. The call schedule includes 10 days per month, encompassing one weekend, with additional compensation for extra call days. The predictable schedule supports a healthy work-life balance.
Support and Work Environment
The supportive environment includes a Medical Assistant in the clinic and an RN in both OR and GI-Endo settings. While there is no APP support, the team consists of experienced MDs and mid-levels in the Emergency Department, along with contracted CRNA services for anesthesia. The absence of an ICU limits the complexity of cases, allowing General Surgeons to focus on 'bread and butter' surgeries.
Qualifications
- Board Eligible or Board Certified in General Surgery.
- Possession of or willingness to obtain a Vermont license and DEA certification.
- ATLS certification required or willingness to obtain.
- Minimum of 1 year of employment experience as a General Surgeon, with 5+ years preferred.
- Must relocate within a 1-hour response time to the hospital when on call, with a 15-minute response to pages.
- Clean malpractice history preferred.
