About the Department

Under the general directions of the Assistant Sewer Administrator, the Sewage Pump Station Operator is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the wastewater collection system. This includes sanitary sewers, pump stations, and related equipment and infrastructure. The maintainer will work to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of the system, prevent overflows and backups, and protect public health and the environment.

Position Duties
  1. Performs daily inspections/checks of pump stations, controls, pumps, valves, sewer lines, manholes, easements, cross countries and other related equipment used in the operation of the collection system; maintains logs as required.
  2. Performs custodial duties at all WPCA properties IE: Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors, dusting, trash removal, restroom cleaning, snow removal and other similar duties as assigned.
  3. Operate and maintain pumps, valves, and other related wastewater equipment.
  4. Performs cleaning, maintenance and repair of the sewer collection system including but not limited to, sewer mainlines, wet wells, siphons, Interceptor Sewers, Trunk Sewers, Cross Countries, and Easements using specialized equipment, such as jet trucks, vacuum trucks, combination jet/vac trucks, to clean, diagnose and repair system issues.
  5. May be required to assist with CCTV I&I inspections of town sewer and storm lines to diagnose issues within the systems.
  6. Will be issued a pager, phone, and/or other electronic notification device and will be periodically on call 24/7 to respond to a pump station system failure or other emergency responses when necessary.  
  7. Physical ability to lift heavy objects to include manhole frames and covers, equipment (pumps and valves) piping, tools, etc., bending, sitting, carrying, climbing, and kneeling. Work within confined spaces for extended periods of time, work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, unpleasant air quality.
  8. Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Participate in safety training and meetings. Basic knowledge of OSHA safety policies.
  9. Communicate effectively with the public and other stakeholders. Work effectively with other team members, including operators, engineers, sub-contractors, and supervisors.
  10. Performs Other related work and tasks as assigned by the Sewer Administrator and/or their designee.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

  1. Skilled in using tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance, maintenance of pump stations and mechanical equipment, and building repair, and mechanical equipment; must poses mechanical aptitude.
  2. Ability to learn sewer collection systems layout for the purpose of maintenance, inspection, and location of infrastructure.
  3. Knowledge of hydraulics, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  4. Strong mechanical and problem-solving skills.
  5. Basic computer skills and understanding of the internet.
Experience and Training:
  1. Graduation from High school, trade school or equivalent
  2. Must possess at time of hire or obtain within 6 months of employment a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) w/tanker endorsement.
  3. Experience in wastewater collection systems, construction, or related field preferred.

 
If Class 2 Sewer Collection Certificate (as issued by the New England Water Pollution Control Authority) is obtained, wage grade moves to "F".

Each candidate must have the required experience and training to be eligible for this position which includes:  High school graduate or GED, experience in general operation and maintenance of mechanical or electrical equipment, preference may be given to those with a current CDL.

Before final certification, each applicant must successfully pass a drug test.
