The Truck Driver (Local) is responsible for the safe, timely, and professional delivery of lawn and garden products, including soils, fertilizers, seed, hardgoods, and related materials to local and regional customers. Drivers ensure each order arrives accurately and in excellent condition while maintaining BFG’s commitment to exceptional service, safety, and compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
Compensation Data: Non-exempt hourly pay, based on experience. Overtime eligible.
Location: Cheswick, PA
Schedule: M-F, Start varies based on business need, generally between 4:30am to 6:30am
Regional Area: Has a 300-mile operating radius from home base, with occasional overnights
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate company vehicles to deliver customer orders on scheduled day routes.
- Load, secure, and unload materials using appropriate equipment (e.g., forklift, pallet jack) while following OSHA and DOT safety standards.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with DOT requirements; promptly report any maintenance issues.
- Verify product accuracy against shipping documentation (pick tickets, RMAs, etc.) and obtain customer signatures.
- Handle return goods and COD transactions per company policy.
- Maintain accurate driver logs, vehicle inspection reports, and delivery documentation.
- Provide professional, courteous customer service and act as a BFG ambassador at all customer locations.
- Support branch operations when not driving, including warehouse duties, product organization, and cycle counting.
- Assist with inter-branch transfers and other operational assignments as directed by the Transportation Supervisor.
What you will need to succeed:
Required:
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): Class A Hazmat Endorsement required
- Minimum age: 21 years old.
- Clean driving record (verified via MVR).
- Ability to pass and maintain DOT physical and drug/alcohol screenings in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).
- OSHA-certified forklift operator (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Ability to lift and move up to 75 lbs. regularly.
- Ability to utilize a pallet jack.
Preferred:
- Prior experience delivering products to retail garden centers, growers, or landscape customers.
- Basic knowledge of route planning and GPS systems.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on customer satisfaction.
- Forklift Certification a plus.
Work Environment
- Primarily operates a commercial vehicle, frequent local travel.
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, rain, or cold.
- Must be able to work flexible hours during seasonal peaks.
