About the Department

Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief, the primary responsibility of the Maintenance Supervisor is to coordinate and schedule maintenance for all units, vehicles and equipment is the Clovis Fire Department.  The Maintenance Supervisor will respond to emergency incidents as requested.

**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.**Position Duties

Typical Duties:

  • Coordinate, plan and organize the scheduling of preventative maintenance and repairs of the Clovis Fire Department fleet and equipment. Prioritizes immediate work requisitions, vehicle safety recalls and preventative maintenance such as oil changes, filters, fuels, grease/lubrication, and replacement of parts. Collaborates with the Fire Chief, Deputy, Fire Battalion Chief(s) and the EMS Battalion Chief in prioritizing the apparatus repair/maintenance needs of the Department. 
  • When called upon to respond to emergency scenes, the Maintenance Supervisor will assist command personnel as needed. Makes emergency service calls for disabled vehicles and equipment at work sites or on the road as needed to perform on-site diagnosis and minor repairs.
  • Operate emergency response vehicles in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.Enforces work safety practices and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Has the ability to use tools in a recognized safe manner. Recommends and implements corrective actions when necessary. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Observes standard safety rules and regulations and reports unsafe conditions. Responsible for handling and disposition of hazardous waste.
  • Performs initial inspection of equipment to determine type and extent of repair needed, and repairs equipment. Troubleshoots hard-to-locate problems, and identifies defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs to a variety of heavy mobile vehicles and equipment. Conducts functional and performance tests using a wide variety of test procedures and equipment on completed work assignments. Uses a wide variety of test procedures (including test drives) and a variety of diagnostic and test equipment in tracing hard-to-locate problems, and completes major repairs, overhauls, and modifications with little or no technical advice. 
  • Repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds a variety of emergency response vehicles, to include their major systems i.e., diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines (including supercharged and turbocharged), automatic/manual transmissions, multi-gear assemblies, and a variety of positioning systems.  Overhauls steering, brakes, clutch, suspension, and hydraulic utility systems, transfer cases, power take-off, etc. Repairs or replaces defective parts such as seals, bearings and gears, as necessary. Coordinates all major overhaul duties and maintains oversite of the work performed by contractors and vendors. Oversees major repairs of differentials, transmissions, clutches, electrical systems, drive trains, brake system rebuilds, suspension, hydraulic systems, etc. 
  • Inspects and conducts preventive maintenance practices involved with an emergency response vehicle chassis and inter-related systems such as axles, engines, transmissions, drivelines, brakes, steering and suspension systems, and wheels and tires. 
  • Inspects and conducts preventive maintenance practices of cabs (fixed and tilt) and the vehicle body, including compartments, warning systems, mounting racks, brackets, latches, and steps and ladders are verified to be within manufacturer's specifications. 
  • Inspects water/foam agent tanks, so that the mounting and condition of the water/foam agent tank is verified; all coated and non-coated surfaces are free of corrosion; sacrificial anodes are evaluated for life-cycle condition and replaced if necessary; the tank is flushed. 
  • Inspects the foam-proportioning system, so that the mounting security and structural integrity are verified; operation and condition of the system are verified to be within manufacturer's specifications; recommended fluid levels are verified. Perform maintenance on a foam-proportioning system, so that deformed, broken, loose, worn, or missing parts are repaired or replaced; the system operates within manufacturer's guidelines; fluid levels are maintained; activities are documented; and additional repair needs are reported.
  • Inspects, maintains, and conducts operational checks of aerial ladder, elevating platform, and water tower systems. The devices are tested for proper operation; activities are documented; and additional repair needs are reported. Verifies each component is within manufacturer’s specifications: inspects the ladder sections of an aerial ladder; inspects the boom sections of an elevating platform or water tower; performs maintenance on aerial sections, booms, platforms and waterways; inspects the hydraulic system components of an aerial device; inspect all mechanical components of the stabilization system; inspect all components of aerial device lifting, rotating, extension and warning systems; inspects the components of the aerial device electrical system; and inspects all components of an aerial device waterway system.
  • Inspects the Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) and associated components, so that the security of mounting of the system is verified; the operation and condition of the system and its associated components, including air tank, hoses, valves and fittings, warning and interlock systems, linkage, and drive shafts, are verified to be within manufacturer's specifications; recommended fluid levels are verified. Performs maintenance on a CAFS and its components, so that the operational condition of the CAFS is preserved or restored; CAFS compressor and system components function to the recommended specifications; all hoses are tight; adjustments are made to stop all fluid leaks; lubricants are applied; all electrical connections are clean and tight; system operation is verified; deformed, broken, loose, worn, or missing parts, including component mounts, drive system, pump, plumbing, and valves, are repaired or replaced; activities are documented; and additional repair needs are reported.
  • Inspects Ambulance patient module and components unique to ambulances, so the structural integrity of the patient module frame is verified; the operation and condition of patient module structure, patient module entry doors, compartment doors, patient module interior systems, components, safety equipment, oxygen system, line voltage system, electrical and lighting systems, is verified to be within manufacturer’s specifications; interface electronics and load management systems are operationally tested. Performs maintenance on Ambulance patient module and components unique to ambulances, so that deformed, broken, loose, worn, or missing parts are repaired or replaced; components are lubricated; calibrations and adjustments are performed; the system’s operational condition is preserved or restored; activities are documented; and additional repair needs are reported.
  • Inspects and conducts preventive maintenance practices on low-voltage electrical systems, so that the mounting security is verified; operation and condition of the low-voltage electrical system is verified to be within manufacturer’s specifications. Inspects all components and accessories of the electrical line voltage generation system, controls, and instrumentation, so that the security of mounting is verified; the operation and condition of the system and drive units, cord reels, lighting, accessories and equipment, safety and protection devices, and instrumentation are verified to be within manufacturer's specifications. Performs maintenance on electrical line voltage generation system, controls, and instrumentation, so that the operational condition of generators, system components, instrumentation, controls, safety and load protection devices, and the drive unit is preserved or restored; lubrication and fluid levels are checked; deformed, broken, loose, worn, or missing parts are repaired or replaced; activities are documented; and additional repair needs are reported.
  • Inspects an auxiliary air compressor, so that the operation and condition of the auxiliary air compressor, warning systems, instrumentation, and interlock systems are verified to be within manufacturer's specifications.
  • Inspect trailers and components unique to emergency response trailers, so that the structural integrity of the frame is verified; the operation and condition of independent suspension systems, the condition of the wheels and tires, braking systems, safety equipment, and lighting systems, is verified to be within manufacturer’s specifications; interface electronics and load management systems are operationally tested. Performs operational verification tests; evaluate reported conditions; recognize and correct deficiencies; use test, calibration, and diagnostic equipment; perform all required maintenance and complete required documentation.
  • Assists in expense forecasts of the Department budget. Participates in procurement activities for supplies, services, equipment, and other items. Ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time. Direct the purchase of parts, oil, anti-freeze, etc. and maintain an appropriate and accurate inventory. Prepares a list of all parts required for repair. Follows up on parts with long lead times, and considers alternate methods of repair, considering repair time and cost. 
  • Operates various tools and specialized testing equipment relating to the accomplishment of required tasks including but not limited to the following; air compressor, cutting torch, arc and wire welders, electrical and hydraulic test equipment, compression testers, motor analyzers, torque wrench, and hand tools common to the mechanic trade.
  • Conducts annual and periodic inspections on rescue equipment, fire apparatus and other support equipment on units to maintain mechanical readiness. Which will include driving the vehicles and apparatus, checking the transmission, engine, and general drivability issues to ensure everything is in proper working condition and up to all safety standards.
  • Prepares fire trucks for the annual NFPA certification inspection of pumps and aerial ladder truck; checks/repairs ladders for inspection. Provides on-site guidance during annual pump testing. Maintains record keeping systems of maintenance reports, pump tests, etc. to ensure maintenance database records are recorded and accurate. Gathers, interprets and prepares data for studies, reports, correspondence and recommendations. 
  • Assists with specifications, design, and conducts acceptance inspections on new Fire and EMS units, vehicles and equipment. Interprets schematic drawings and layouts to perform problem analysis. Performs acceptance tests and/or road tests to check emergency response vehicles for proper operation of suspension, drive train, electrical systems, air/hydraulic systems, secondary brake systems, and other applicable systems. 
  • Performs preventative maintenance training for Driver Operators. Training uniformed personnel in the general maintenance practices for emergency vehicles and equipment. Conduct, participate in, and coordinate mechanical training classes for appropriate ASE and EVT certifications are available to persons performing maintenance on emergency response vehicles. Collaborates with the Fire Chief, Deputy and the Training Officer in prioritizing the training needs of the Department.
  • Ensures adherence to established policies and procedures to remain in compliance with local, state, and federal rules, regulations and policies. Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, and review publications to become and remain current on the principles and practices. Maintains regulatory compliance by keeping current on industry trends, regulations, and issues. Obtain and maintain knowledge of mechanical principles and limits of units and equipment.
  • Submit monthly reports on the status of repairs and maintenance in either electronic or paper form. Provides daily status reports as warranted to keep Chief Officer(s) fully and accurately informed on issues. Identifies areas of concern for management for review and potential action.
  • Collaborates in software update and conversion projects. 
  • Respond to all citizens' questions, comments or complaints in a courteous and timely manner. Continue to improve operations and work, cooperatively and jointly, with all levels of the department to provide quality customer service.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly with City Administration, department directors, staff, and the public to provide quality services. 
  • Perform other activities, and program oversight, as assigned by the Fire Chief or the Deputy.


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Three (3) years of technical training and hands on experience in maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of fire pumps, gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems and automotive electrical systems or any equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.   
  • Two (2) years of experience at the rank of Fire Lieutenant or five (5) years of experience as a Driver/Operator with the Clovis Fire Department or any combination of experience, education, and training provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • A valid driver's licenses is required.  
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  
Licenses and Certifications:
  • NFPA 1071 Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) I, II, or III
  • National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certification
  • Fire Instructor I
  • Valid driver's license equivalent to a New Mexico Class E
  • Certifications listed above, if not currently achieved, must be completed within two (2) years of appointment
