Job Description
Director of Nursing
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Administrator
PURPOSE:
Manages the planning, organizing, operationalizing, and evaluating of all nursing services
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently registered in the State of Michigan. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is desired or equivalent in experience.
2. Experience: Considerable (at least 5 years) experience is necessary in related management positions.
DUTIES:
The duties of the position may include, but are not limited to the following areas:
? Establishes the objectives, goals, policies, and procedures of the Nursing Department.
? Implements new plans and/or policies for the Nursing Department and monitors the progress of the implementation.
? Evaluates all nurses.
? Investigates unusual incidents and reports before forwarding to the Administrator.
? Investigates all medication errors with nursing action taken.
? Investigates resident complaints, recommends actions to the Administrator if indicated.
? Conducts Nurse and Nurse Assistant meetings monthly as necessary.
? Promotes and maintains good rapport among nursing personnel, medical staff, therapy staff, residents, public, and visitors.
? Evaluates nursing service needs and determines staff requirements in conjunction with the Administrator.
? Serves as consultant on admitting and discharge policies.
? Establishes administration procedures and control of medications under the direction of the Pharmacist and Pharmacy Committee.
? Assists in the development of criteria and standards for measuring the quality of healthcare provided within the agency.
? Carries a twenty-four (24) hour per day, seven (7) day a week responsibility.
? Maintains a reference library of nursing material.
? Prepares and submits required reports and maintains statistics as directed.
? Prepares forms for the various State and Federal agencies.
? Attends all department meetings.
? Attends workshops, conventions, meetings, seminars on current nursing practice in long term care facilities.
? Assists physician when requested.
? Assists in discipline, counseling, problem solving, controlling, reviewing schedules, planning and implementing.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (with or without the aid of mechanical devices):
- Must be able to move frequently throughout the workday
- Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner
- Must be able to cope with the physical and emotional stress of the position
- Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met
- Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility , which include a medical and physical examination
- Must have the ability to work effectively with residents and personnel.
- Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 lbs. to a minimum height of 3ft and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 10 feet.
