Position Overview:
The Assistant Volleyball Coach & Sports Information Assistant is a dual-role position that supports both the competitive excellence of Bethany College's volleyball program and the comprehensive communication efforts of the Department of Athletics. Under the direction of the Head Volleyball Coach and the Sports Information Director, this position assists in recruiting, coaching, and developing NAIA student-athletes while contributing to game day operations, digital media management, and athletic communications. This role requires a commitment to fostering a positive, growth-oriented environment that prioritizes student-athlete development, academic success, retention, and community engagement, all within the guidelines of Bethany College, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Essential Functions:
Assistant Volleyball Coach Responsibilities:
- Lead, support, and prioritize student-athlete retention and persistence to graduation
- Create and foster a positive environment of growth, development, and support for student-athletes, both in and out of sport; negative, demeaning, and derogatory coaching and communication tactics will not be tolerated
- Assist in formulating the team's competitive schedule and organizing student-athletes for successful and safe competition
- Assist in planning and conducting pre- and post-season conditioning and training programs
- Assist in planning and leading pre- and post-season individual meetings with student-athletes to discuss progress, development, and goals
- Keep abreast of current trends and methods by participating in clinics, workshops, and other professional development opportunities
- Adhere to College, KCAC, and NAIA policies and procedures at all times
- Foster cooperative working relationships with the Head Coach, Dean of Athletics, Assistant Athletic Director, and all staff or team members associated with the program
- Cooperate with other coaches in providing the optimum sports program possible under existing conditions
- Assist in the administration of all phases of the NAIA volleyball program, including recruiting qualified student-athletes in adherence to the College's recruitment scholarship model
- Adhere to all College spending policies and procedures and the operational sport budget
- Actively lead fundraising efforts for the volleyball program as well as for the Department of Athletics
- Assist in preparing timely and accurate documents, such as travel expense statements and itineraries
- Support the Department of Athletics mission, vision, and values
- Assist in monitoring and supporting the academic success of student-athletes
- Lead community engagement and service-learning opportunities within the volleyball program
- Help prepare and manage records for the team
- Assist in arranging team travel and meals
- Assist in overseeing the safety conditions of the facility or area in which the sport is conducted at all times
- Assist in coordinating visits by recruits and their families
- Assist in general upkeep and protection of equipment under the jurisdiction of the program
- Participate in staff and team meetings, providing input and suggestions
- Assist in providing continual evaluation of processes and procedures; suggest methods to improve area operations, efficiency, and service to both internal and external customers
- Work in collaboration and cooperation with other departments and academic divisions on campus, using timely and appropriate judgment in upward communication regarding department concerns and responsibilities
- Take the initiative to provide new ideas and concepts to improve the efficiency and productivity of the staff
Sports Information Assistant Responsibilities:
- Assist with reporting scores and writing game recaps for athletic events
- Support the hiring and training of student staff as needed and assigned
- Assist with updating the Bethany Athletic website regularly with current information, statistics, and content
- Assist with maintaining Bethany College Athletics social media accounts and monitor individual sports programs' accounts
- Assist with sports information game day coverage as needed and assigned, including but not limited to:
- Assisting with live video streaming at home varsity and junior varsity contests (unless unable due to equipment shortage as a result of scheduling conflicts)
- Assisting in the hiring, scheduling, and monitoring of student workers to run streams
- Assisting with stat taking and/or stat spotting
- Assisting with press box and/or scorer's table duties as needed, such as clocks, scoreboards, etc.
- Taking pictures or hiring student photographers to take pictures of sporting events, community service, and other athletic functions; maintaining photo archives for public and website usage
- Work with coaches, Dean of Athletics, and Assistant Athletic Director on game day setup and takedown; assist with organizing National Anthem singers, band, cheer and dance squads, announcers, tickets, programs, etc.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Clear understanding of the NAIA philosophy and the role of athletics in a private, church-related liberal arts setting
- Excellent grammar, spelling, and writing abilities
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite; knowledge of desktop publishing
- Functional knowledge with Microsoft Windows and basic personal computer operation
- Competent in email and document management
- Ability to use multiple Internet browsers
- Willingness to adapt to a changing technology environment, including updates, security, and new versions
- Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, administration, and the community-at-large
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to handle multiple projects/assignments concurrently and be results-oriented
- Highly motivated and works well both independently and in a team environment
- Regular attendance required
Preferred:
- Previous coaching experience at the collegiate level
- Experience with sports information, athletic communications, or digital media management
- Knowledge of video streaming platforms and statistical software
- Photography and graphic design skills
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from constituents, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Working Conditions
The work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks but includes exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases. Work outside involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Semi-frequent or frequent conference-wide travel, or to assigned locations; frequent, prolonged, and irregular hours. Work performed indoors is generally with ambient room temperatures, lighting, and traditional office equipment as found in a typical office environment.

Travel as required by the team schedule, as determined by the coaching staff, the Dean of Athletics, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
