Description:
The Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of construction projects from start to closeout. This role ensures accurate project cost tracking, billing, revenue recognition, and financial reporting while supporting project managers and leadership with timely and reliable financial data. The Project Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining compliance, controlling costs, and supporting PTE’s operational and financial objectives.
Project Financial Management
- Set up and maintain project budgets, cost codes, and financial structures in the accounting system.
- Monitor project costs, commitments, change orders, and profitability throughout the project lifecycle.
- Analyze job cost reports and identify cost overruns, variances, and trends.
- Ensure accurate allocation of labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
Billing & Revenue Recognition
- Prepare and process progress billings, time & materials billings, and change order billings.
- Ensure compliance with contract terms, lien requirements, and billing schedules.
- Support revenue recognition in accordance with applicable accounting standards (percentage of completion, job cost methods, etc.).
- Coordinate with Project Managers to resolve billing discrepancies and unbilled revenue.
Accounts Payable & Subcontractor Management
- Review and process subcontractor invoices for accuracy, compliance, and proper coding.
- Track subcontractor contracts, insurance certificates, W-9s, and lien waivers.
- Support retention tracking and release in accordance with contract terms.
Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly project cost reports, forecasts, and financial summaries for management.
- Assist with cash flow projections related to construction projects.
- Support internal audits, external audits, and compliance reviews related to project accounting.
Collaboration & Compliance
- Work closely with Project Managers, Operations, HR/Payroll, and Finance teams to ensure financial accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, internal controls, and applicable labor and tax regulations.
- Support process improvements related to project accounting, reporting, and system controls.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related fields (required).
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of project accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry.
- Strong understanding of job cost accounting, construction billing, and cost controls.
- Experience working with multi-project environments and tight deadlines.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in construction accounting or ERP systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar).
- Strong Excel skills (job cost reports, reconciliations, data analysis).
- Familiarity with payroll cost allocation and labor burdening is a plus.
