About this job
Augment Professional Services (APS)
Position Summary
The Assistant Civil Designer – Utility-Scale Solar at Augment Professional Services (APS) supports the planning, design, and construction execution of large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities. This role focuses on civil site development for greenfield and brownfield solar farms, partnering with Engineers, Project Managers, and EPC teams to deliver constructible, schedule-driven civil designs that support mass grading, access roads, stormwater compliance, and long-lead construction sequencing. The position utilizes AutoCAD Civil 3D to develop production-ready design deliverables aligned with owner standards, EPC requirements, and regulatory approvals.
Key Responsibilities
Solar Civil Design & Site Development
- Assist in the civil design of utility-scale solar facilities (100MW+ typical) using AutoCAD Civil 3D, including:
- Mass grading and cut/fill optimization for tracker systems
- Access roads, crane paths, and maintenance roads
- Drainage channels, culverts, and stormwater conveyance systems
- Stormwater management facilities and SWPPP-driven erosion & sediment control (E&S)
- Site preparation for inverter pads, equipment yards, substations, and O&M facilities
- Mass grading and cut/fill optimization for tracker systems
- Support layout coordination with tracker row geometry, pile locations, and electrical collection systems to ensure civil designs align with constructability and installation tolerances.
Modeling, Quantities & Earthwork Optimization
- Develop and refine Civil 3D surfaces, corridors, and grading models to support earthwork balance, haul optimization, and construction phasing.
- Perform cut/fill volume calculations and grading optimization to minimize export/import and reduce overall site costs.
- Generate cross-sections, profiles, and plan views from survey data to illustrate existing terrain, proposed grades, and drainage flow paths.
- Produce quantity take-offs for earthwork, roads, drainage features, and erosion control to support estimating, procurement, and construction planning.
- Prepare functional model exports and drawing packages for use by EPCs, civil contractors, and grading crews.
Drawing Production & Coordination
- Produce engineering drawings from redlines, sketches, mark-ups, and client/EPC feedback while adhering to APS drafting and solar-specific standards.
- Utilize Sheet Set Manager, X-Refs, data references, grading objects, and labeling styles to maintain consistency across large drawing packages.
- Coordinate CAD files and civil design data with:
- Electrical design teams (DC/AC collection, trenching interfaces)
- Structural/tracker vendors
- Environmental, geotechnical, and permitting consultants
- EPC partners and owner representatives
- Electrical design teams (DC/AC collection, trenching interfaces)
- Maintain organized project files, revisions, and plot sets in accordance with APS document-control and QA/QC procedures.
Construction Support & Execution Alignment
- Incorporate construction sequencing, access constraints, and installation logistics into civil layouts to support accelerated solar build schedules.
- Support field teams by updating designs to reflect RFIs, field changes, and as-built conditions.
- Assist with civil design updates tied to permitting revisions, stormwater approvals, and owner or AHJ comments.
- Apply construct-ability principles to ensure designs are practical for large-scale grading, tracker installation, and balance-of-plant (BOP) activities
