The Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring wire production equipment (such as drawing, bunching, cabling, cutting, and spooling machines) to safely produce wire and cable to specification while meeting quality and productivity standards. Operators perform basic maintenance, inspections, and documentation to support continuous, safe operations in a wire manufacturing environment.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Set up and operate wire production machines (drawing, twisting, cabling, cutting, spooling) according to work orders, standard operating procedures, and safety requirements.
- Adjust machine settings (speed, tension, guides, dies) to maintain required diameters, lay lengths, insulation clearances, and other product specifications.
- Monitor machines during operation, identify irregular conditions (breaks, tangles, diameter out of spec, poor spooling), and take corrective action or notify supervision/maintenance.
- Perform in‑process quality checks, including measuring wire dimensions, visual inspection for surface defects, and verifying labeling and count/length against job orders.
- Load and unload reels or coils of wire, cut wire to length where required, and package/bundle finished product per work instructions.
- Complete production records, labels, and traceability logs accurately and on time (lengths, scrap, downtime, lot numbers).
- Perform basic preventive maintenance, cleaning, and minor adjustments on machines; keep work area clean, organized, and compliant with 5S and safety standards.
- Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Communicate effectively with other operators, material handlers, quality, and supervisors about issues impacting safety, quality, or production.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support department and plant goals.
Qualifications and skills
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Prior manufacturing or machine operator experience, preferably in wire or cable production, is strongly preferred but not always required.
- Ability to read and follow work orders, cut sheets, and basic production drawings in English.
- Basic math skills for measuring, counting, and recording lengths, diameters, and tolerances.
- Ability to use basic measuring tools (tape measure, calipers, micrometers, gauges) after training.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn machine setup, troubleshooting, and minor adjustments.
- Strong attention to detail and quality, with willingness to stop and correct problems.
- Ability to work safely in a fast‑paced production environment, standing for long periods and handling wire reels and materials within established lifting limits.
Working conditions and schedule
- Work performed in a manufacturing plant environment with exposure to machine noise, moving equipment, and typical industrial hazards; PPE such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves required.
- Frequent standing, walking, reaching, and handling of wire reels and tools; may require lifting up to the company’s specified weight limit (for example, 50 lb) with or without assistance.
- Work schedule may involve 12 hours sift shifts, weekends, and overtime based on production demand.
