About the Department

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

The Custodian cleans, maintains, and repairs assigned buildings and surrounding grounds in a non-disruptive manner. The incumbent must be bondable. Swing and night shift work required.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:

  • Performs cleaning, disinfecting, and maintenance on all types of flooring, fixtures, furniture, offices, bathrooms, and breakrooms.
  • Replenishes supplies as needed.
  • Performs routine grounds maintenance.
  • Performs minor repairs. Reports the need for major maintenance or repair as needed.
  • Sets up meeting rooms and rearrange furniture as requested.
  • Maintains equipment, materials, and supplies in proper condition.
  • Documents work performed and supplies and materials used.
  • Orders replacement parts as needed.
  • Responds to questions and complaints from employees and the public.
  • Maintains familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Updates the building & grounds maintenance supervisor on work status and important developments they may need to know in order to function effectively.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA’s)

    An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:

    Knowledge

    • Basic knowledge of record keeping and report preparation.
    • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of janitorial care practices and techniques.
    • Knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques, tools, systems, and equipment used in operating, maintaining, and repairing buildings.
    • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices of the trade.
    • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.
    • Thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.
  • Skills 

    • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Understanding and carrying out written and oral communications.
    • Managing time effectively.
    • Applying basic accounting concepts. Making and verifying arithmetical computations with accuracy and speed.
    • Using the tools and equipment listed below.
  • Abilities

    • Complying with Elko County policies and departmental procedures.
    • Contributing effectively to group objectives and activities.
    • Working both independently and as part of a team. 
    • Analyzing and recommending improvements to equipment and facilities as needed.
    • Solving practical problems and dealing with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 
    • Having and maintaining the physical ability to endure long periods of dexterity in all types of weather conditions.
    • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, city, county, state, and federal officials, and the public as needed. Dealing with problems courteously and tactfully.
    • Education:       High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree

      Probation:        6 months

      Experience:      One year of related experience

      Certifications:   Must maintain a valid Nevada driver’s license

                              Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour card

                              Must maintain any required approvals and designations as required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:

  • Work is performed in an office building setting or outdoors. The employee may be required to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate tools and machinery. The employee is required to have the coordination and dexterity to adjust and make minor repairs to equipment. The employee will regularly perform repetitive motions.
  • The employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. 
  • The employee is frequently required to stand or walk for long periods and may be required to walk on uneven or slippery surfaces.
  • The employee must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to see in bright light, low light, and low visibility conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
  • The employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, noise, electrical shocks, hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust, and noxious odors.
  • Tools and equipment used include a personal computer, printer, telephone, calculator, copy machine and other associated office equipment, power buffer, cleaning equipment, cleaning chemicals, commercial vacuums, carpet cleaners, and snow shovels. 
  • Incumbent will occasionally be asked to travel in a county vehicle.
