Job Description

Job Summary

The Operating Crew Lead supports management by providing leadership and oversight in operations.  Key responsibilities include coordinating and planning work assignments, supervising personnel, reviewing performance, ensuring proper documentation, and maintaining compliance with safety and environmental standards.  This role is accountable for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the plant while supporting continuous improvement, competitive performance, and profitability.

Working Conditions:

  • Work performed indoors and outdoors under varied conditions including confined spaces, elevated areas, extreme temperatures, noise, dust, fumes, and water exposure.

  • Subject to rotating shifts, overtime, and call-outs.

  • May require work around asbestos-containing materials.

  • May require certification and operation of heavy equipment such as forklifts and skid-steers.

What you will do

  • Serve as a role model in safety, productivity, decision-making, and overall workplace conduct. Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to employees.

  • Lead by example in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Maintain thorough knowledge of safety rules, operating procedures, and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance by all employees.

  • Demonstrate safety leadership by observing, enforcing, and promoting safe work practices; address unsafe behaviors or conditions immediately.

  • Ensure the productivity and accountability of assigned employees while promoting teamwork and cooperation.

  • Monitor employee performance, addressing both positive and negative issues directly. Take correction action when needed and escalate to management when problems persist.

  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.

  • Ensure accuracy and timely completion of required paperwork and reports.

  • Maintain effective communication with management and co-workers.

  • Understand and support company vision and business objectives, sharing goals and performance measures with employees.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental rules and regulations.

  • Operate plant equipment includes boilers, turbine generators, and combustion turbines. May perform electrical switching depending on location.

  • Conduct preventive maintenance tasks and assist with maintenance activities as required.

  • Report to work fit for duty and free from drugs or alcohol; ensure employees are prepared both mentally and physically for duty.

  • Review employee time entry for accuracy.

  • Initiate plant-wide call-outs as necessary.

  • Review and verity contractor Hot Work Permits each morning.

  • Lead daily planning meetings at 0630 and 1430 with maintenance leads and management.

  • Conduct morning tailgate talks with Operations to discuss daily maintenance activities and operational concerns.

  • Perform required LOTO procedures and issue permits for routine and outage-related maintenance.

  • Inspect plant systems prior to hot work or establish LOTO boundaries.

  • Fill shift vacancies as needed for new and existing positions.

  • Conduct boiler walkdowns and monitor plant equipment and operations.

  • Assign and track operational preventive maintenance tasks to ensure timely execution and support of maintenance activities.

  • Oversee plant cleanup activities.

  • Monitor Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) and adjust chemical additions as needed.

  • Monitor PJFF Baghouse performance.

  • Coordinate heavy equipment preventive maintenance and report issues to appropriate vendor.

  • Support outage planning and coordination efforts.

  • Monitor and ensure timely completion of operator rounds in accordance with the established schedules and procedures.

  • Post and maintain the weekly shift schedule.

  • Maintain and update the overtime list accurately.

  • Order AQCS lime, activated carbon, and SCR ammonia.

  • Arrange trucking for bottom ash removal.

  • Monitor and order oil and grease inventory (drum and bulk storage).

  • Maintain adequate supply of oil absorbent and oil dry.

  • Track, maintain, and order operational tools and battery supplies.

Education Requirements

  •  High School Diploma or GED. Preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ISs), operating manuals, and technical manuals.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and basic computer skills.

  • Proficiency in reading, mathematics, and effective verbal and written communication.

  • Ability to comprehend Right-to-Know information.

  • Basic knowledge of First Aid and CPR.

  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills, especially under emergency conditions.

  • Ability to make quick, accurate decision and execute effectively.

  • Good overall health, vision, and color perception with adequate field and depth perception.

  • Ability to properly wear and use all required PPE, including respirators.

  • Physical ability to climb, lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and work at heights.

  • Comfort working in physically demanding and potentially hazardous environments.
