Job Title: Prototype Lead
Reports to: Operations Manager
Position Status: Full Time
GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Prototype Lead is responsible for leading the fabrication and welding of prototypes from concept through functional builds. This role works closely with Engineering and Project Management to support rapid product development, design validation, and iterative improvements. The Prototype Lead is a hands-on contributor who also leads and mentors a small prototype team, ensuring quality, safety, and timely delivery of prototype assemblies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prototype Fabrication & Welding- Fabricate and weld steel sheet and steel tube prototypes using MIG, TIG, and other applicable welding processes
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications to build functional prototypes
- Perform cutting, forming, fixturing, fitting, and finishing operations
- Troubleshoot fit-up, manufacturability, and design issues during prototype builds
- Modify and rework prototypes based on engineering feedback
- Lead daily prototype build activities and assign work to team members
- Balance leadership responsibilities with hands-on fabrication work
- Mentor and train team members on fabrication techniques, welding quality, and safety practices
- Ensure prototype builds meet quality, safety, and performance expectations
- Work closely with Engineering to provide design-for-manufacturing (DFM) feedback
- Partner with Project Managers to align prototype builds with schedules and milestones
- Participate in design reviews and development meetings
- Communicate build status, risks, and technical challenges clearly and proactively
- Develop and maintain prototype build processes and work instructions
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of fabrication and welding equipment
- Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient prototype workspace
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the prototype shop
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Able to stand, lift, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods
- High level of manual dexterity and attention to detail
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Bilingual preferred; English or Spanish
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- 5+ years of hands-on fabrication and welding experience in a manufacturing or prototype environment
- Strong experience welding steel sheet and steel tubing (MIG/TIG preferred)
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and CAD models
- Experience leading or mentoring a small team
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving development environment
