Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) serves Wyandotte County, a community in Northeastern Kansas with a population of around 170,000, with five library branches and three mobile libraries. KCKPL was formed in 1893 and came under the authority of the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District Board of Education in 1899, where it remains today. The mission of Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is to connect members of a dynamic community with information, tools, resources, and welcoming spaces to enrich lives in Wyandotte County. 

 

Job Goal: 
The Internal Communications Specialist supports the library’s communications efforts by managing and maintaining the library’s internal communications channels and systems. This position is responsible for developing, organizing, and expanding internal communications to ensure all staff receive timely, accurate, and consistent information from a centralized source and in a unified voice. The Internal Communications Specialist works closely with administration, managers, and departments to coordinate and distribute systemwide communications, support the rollout of new initiatives, trainings, and updates, and ensure internal communications supports the library’s mission. 

 

Essential Functions 

  • Collaborate with library staff to create and maintain a staff intranet that provides timely updates, resources, and systemwide information. 
  • Work with the administration team to ensure systemwide communications are delivered in a unified and consistent voice (news, updates, and new initiatives).  
  • Work with managers and library staff to draft, edit, and distribute systemwide communications.  
  • Monitor engagement with internal communications and recommend improvements to increase clarity, reach, and effectiveness.  
  • Coordinate with the library’s training department to communicate new training, schedules, and staff development opportunities. 
  • Create and distribute KCKPL’s staff newsletter.
  • Adhere to KCKPL’s voice and style guidelines, producing high-quality, accurate, and error-free content. 
  • Support the coordination of marketing and communications projects and initiatives. 
  • Collaborate across departments with staff to ensure cohesive and consistent messaging across internal platforms. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent mix of education and experience. 
  • Three years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field. 
  • Experience working in a library, nonprofit, or public agency preferred. 
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience with design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite or Canva preferred. 
  • Must pass a background check according to library standards. 
  • Must understand and be willing to fulfill the mission, policies, and procedures of KCKPL. 
  • Must provide own transportation to and from library and outreach locations. 
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and extra duty as needed.

Benefits: 
Vacation, disability, and personal days granted annually pursuant to KCKPS Board Policies, GARH – Absences, Leave and Vacation. Salary based on library classification and salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is based on qualifications and experience. A willingness to work evenings, weekends, and extra duty as needed is a condition of employment.

 

Starting Pay Range:

$24.70-$28.24
