Job Description
Chicago Metalcraft, a stainless-steel fabricator serving the food industry, is hiring for a SOLIDWORKS Design Engineer to support the design of stairs/railings, catwalks, mezzanines, conveyors, packaging machines, and precision sheet metal fabrications. This role requires high attention to detail, strong organization, mechanical design expertise, and collaboration with workshop leaders and sales engineering,
including project management responsibilities and occasional short-term travel for on-site design capture.
Key responsibilities
• Design stairs/railings, catwalks, mezzanines, conveyors, platforms, packaging machines, and precision metal parts.
• Produce detailed mechanical designs with high organizational rigor and accuracy.
• Support project management for work under their design.
• Collaborate with workshop leads and sales engineering for application development and technical support.
• Perform on-site visits as needed for design detail capture (short-term, including overnight travel).
Qualifications
• Mechanical design experience and/or education; mechanical engineering background preferred.
• Required: SOLIDWORKS proficiency with ability to demonstrate complex designs; sheet metal design experience; high level of detail and organization.
• Preferred: SOLIDWORKS certification; rendering experience.
• Plus: Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD welding detail dimensioning; controls experience and machine control schematic detailing. Project management experience and/or PMP certification;
Additional skills
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving across design and production.
• Effective labor management and process efficiency mindset.
• Clear communication and team coordination in a high-responsibility environment.
• Ability to work hands-on while planning and guiding project execution.
• Familiarity with food-industry equipment standards and quality expectations.
• Experience in fabrication or machining
