Marine Patrol

About the Department

The Newaygo County Sheriff's Office is seeking individuals to fill several Marine Deputy positions for the 2026 summer season.  These are temporary/seasonal positions.  Duties will begin the first week of May with patrols beginning the Memorial Day holiday and end with the Labor Day holiday.

Position Duties

Responsibilities include enforcement of the Marine Safety Act on inland lakes and rivers within Newaygo County. Deputies will perform waterway patrols, issue citations, warnings, safety checks, process accidents, assist with search and rescues and possible body recoveries. Deputies will be responsible for, proper maintenance on boats, engines, trailers, vehicles, and caring for all county issued gear and equipment.

The objective of the Marine Safety program is to promote safety in the use of recreational watercraft through enforcement and education.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age and out of high school at least one year prior to the start of the boating season. A Diploma or GED is required. Must be able to pass a swim test. Able to work well with others. 

Prior boating knowledge and a mechanical aptitude, computer skills and written and verbal communication skills are desired.

Will be required to attend the 2026 Michigan Sheriff’s Association Marine Certification Training which is a 40-hour training.  All expenses paid for by the County.

Hours are based on a 40-hour work week and is weather dependent.  Deputies will be required to work weekends with holidays mandatory.
