Survey Party Chief
Land Development Surveying
Location: High Point, NC
Department: Surveying
Reports To: Field Crew Coordinator
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
About the Role
FEI is seeking an experienced Survey Party Chief to lead field surveying operations on land development projects. This role serves as FEIs primary on-site representative, responsible for supervising crews, executing survey work accurately, and ensuring clear communication between the field and office.
This position is intended for a seasoned field survey professional who can independently manage daily operations, equipment, and personnel while maintaining high standards of quality and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership & Client Interaction
- Serve as FEIs on-site representative during survey operations
- Communicate professionally with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders
- Supervise and direct survey crew members during daily field activities
- Ensure efficient daily scheduling and utilization of field personnel
Survey Operations
- Perform and supervise field work for:
- Boundary surveys
- Topographic surveys
- Control surveys
- Mortgage surveys
- As-built surveys
- Construction staking and layout
- Apply proper surveying methods, measurements, and standards appropriate to the equipment and project requirements
- Ensure crews gather all required information and materials before leaving the office each day
- Accurately download, report, and deliver daily field data to the office
Equipment & Reporting
- Maintain responsibility for survey equipment, vehicles, and supplies
- Ensure proper care, use, and maintenance of all assigned equipment
- Accurately report daily field time for client billing
- Communicate effectively with office staff, engineers, managers, and other crews
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma
- Minimum of 3 years of land development surveying experience
- Demonstrated experience leading or supervising survey field crews
- Strong working knowledge of field surveying practices and construction staking
- Valid Drivers License
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Topcon and Leica survey equipment
- Familiarity with Ajera expense and timesheet systems
- Interest in long-term growth within the surveying profession
Work Environment & Schedule
- Primarily field-based role
- Work occurs in varied outdoor environments and weather conditions
- MonFri, with occasional weekend work and travel to meet client needs
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Perform field work throughout the day in varied terrain
- Transport and position survey equipment of varying weights
- Operate precision instruments outdoors
- Maintain physical stamina in diverse weather conditions
