Position Summary

The Regional Safety Manager (RSM) provides field safety leadership and strategic support across assigned areas in the Northeast and Southeast regions. This role supports the HSE Lead (or other assigned department senior manager) in implementing and managing the company HSE program; ensures compliance with OSHA and client requirements; conducts field audits and investigations; and drives a proactive safety culture across multiple project sites. The role requires regular regional travel and may manage direct reports.

  • Work Location: Ideal candidate will reside in either Chicago, Miami, or Charlotte
  • Travel: ~50%+ overnight travel across the assigned regions
  • Schedule: Ability to work autonomously and be on-call after hours, weekends, and holidays as assigned.

Safety Leadership & Culture

  • Provide visible field leadership; coach supervisors and crews on proactive hazard recognition and safe work behaviors.
  • Collaborate with operations leadership to align field practices with corporate standards and client expectations.

Compliance, Audits & Field Engagement

  • Lead and coordinate HSE programs to ensure compliance with OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conduct routine field inspections (including daily site visits and bi-weekly documented audits) across active projects.
  • Participate in and review daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs); issue timely guidance and corrective recommendations.
  • Develop safety meeting agendas, toolbox topics, and safety alerts based on field observations and audit findings.

Incident Prevention, Investigation & Case Management

  • Perform root cause analyses for all incidents and near misses; complete and submit reports promptly.
  • Identify and evaluate hazards associated with underground construction, pipeline operations, and transportation activities; assess risk probability and severity; implement appropriate controls.
  • Assist with root cause identification, investigations, and case management in the assigned area, including field audits, new-hire orientation, and coaching.
  • Coordinate injury management with the Workers’ Compensation Manager; assist in establishing area resources and provider relationships as assigned.

Planning, Reporting & Coordination

  • Review weekly Operations Reports with the HSE Lead to inform safety planning, resourcing, and field focus.
  • Track leading and lagging indicators; trend events to target audits and corrective actions.
  • Report daily safety experience and plan-of-the-day inaccuracies to the HSE Lead; ensure timely escalation for serious events.
  • Ensure investigations, corrective actions, and safety planning are purposeful, complete, and well-documented.
  • Complete a monthly expense report for company Purchasing card; spend within departmental guidelines.
  • Coordinate support efforts with the HSE Lead and other safety leaders; may lead special projects related to organization-wide safety initiatives.
  • Manage direct reports as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education/Experience:
    • Associate’s degree in a safety-related field (or equivalent), or 5+ years of verifiable safety experience.
    • Traffic Control, Sewer Camera Inspection (CCTV), and Hydro Vacuum Excavation experience strongly desired; experience in utility construction or construction support services within the utility sector is a plus
  • Certifications:
    • Accredited safety certification preferred (e.g., CHST, OSHT, ASP, CSP, CIH, STS).
    • OSHA 500 Trainer certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of OSHA and applicable regulatory frameworks.
    • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
    • Exceptional written and oral communication; comfortable speaking to small and large groups.
    • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work autonomously with high discretion and confidentiality.
    • Resourceful problem-solver with a positive, customer-service mindset; effective at influencing without authority.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Clear, current state driver’s license.
    • Able to pass a background check.
    • Pass a pre-employment drug test and participate in random testing thereafter (including marijuana).
    • This position is subject to the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) drug & alcohol testing regulations as outlined in 49 CFR Part 382 and/or 49 CFR Part 199.

Working Environment & Physical Demands

  • Frequent work near moving traffic and machinery and in outdoor environments (inclement weather, heat/humidity, dust, asphalt).
  • Ability to lift/push/pull/carry up to 50 lbs; good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, jog, climb, kneel, squat, bend at the waist, grasp, and hold tools/objects with both hands for extended periods.
  • Noise levels are generally loud; must be able to quickly move arms and legs and maintain situational awareness.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Pay Range: $90,000 – $120,000 (commensurate with experience, certifications, and market conditions).
