LIFEGUARD—Aquatics facilitates and leads dynamic camp activities based on their activity focus area, life guarding and WSI instruction, while also supporting the general camp environment and programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Keeps watch over people swimming in the pool and patrol the pool area. Ensures that swimmers are obeying the safety rules of the pool. Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies. Certified in and able to administer first aid in the event of injury, able to rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and certified and able to administer CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.

2. Patrols pool area regularly and facilitates the upkeep of assigned activity area (including pool, splash pad, pool room, and other areas) ensuring that all areas are safe and well maintained.

3. Review lesson plans with clear goals that are clearly tied to the activity focus area and are intentional in purpose. Review activities for the activity focus area that are creative, dynamic, fun and safe for campers of all ages and abilities.

4. Works closely with staff to create and adapt activities so each participant, regardless of disability, is able to participate in some manner.

5.Works with the Director, Melwood Recreation Center, Program Director, Camps and Retreats, Day Camp Manager and Lifeguard Supervisor to develop and implement new activities and programs that are inclusive and therapeutic for participants of all abilities.

6.Assist the Director, MRC,PD, Day Camp Manager, Lifeguard Supervisor and other staff in the coordination and facilitation of programs for all camp participants.

7. Works with staff in a respectful manner, participating in building a positive and safe camp living environment.

8. Willingness to assist in other areas and necessary and be flexible with duties needed to ensure camp is a positive experience for all campers.

9. Demonstrates positive behavioral management techniques and communicates with individuals in a person-centered, age appropriate manner.

10. Completes assigned notes, daily logs and other documentation thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner.

11. Facilitates participant’s self-esteem through positive interactions and building a relationship of trust.

12. Develops free time activities that promote team work, positive interaction and personal growth.

13. Attends and actively participate in required training, team meetings and supervision meetings.

14. Adhere to and further the mission of Melwood by creating a supportive environment for participants and staff.

15. Provide excellent internal and external customer service.

16. Adhere to and further the Recreation Center Core Values: Integrity, Respect, Wellness, and Growth.

17. Adhere to State of Maryland, PATH, American Camp Association, CARF, and Melwood policies and procedures.

18. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

LIFEGUARD is supervised by the SUPERVISING LIFEGUARD.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to stand/walk 50% of work time, sit and/or drive 50%. Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull 60 pounds. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach. All of these requirements are necessary in order to supervise and assist youth and individuals with disabilities. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment in potentially extreme weather conditions. Staff may be required to move between program focus areas as needed and must be willing to work with people of all ages and ability levels, including personal care and lifting when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS H.S. Diploma or equivalent required. BA/BS in special education, therapeutic recreation, psychology or related field (achieved or in progress) and previous experience working in an inclusive camp environment preferred. Demonstrated ability in providing support in a respectful manner to participants of all abilities. Certification in life guarding and water safety instruction.
