Project Manager – Civil / Utility Infrastructure

A well-established Bay Area contractor is seeking an experienced Project Manager to deliver complex public-works and utility infrastructure projects across San Francisco and surrounding municipalities.
While the firm operates as an electrical contractor, a significant portion of its work is civil and utility-focused, including joint trench, underground infrastructure, roadway excavation, and coordination with multiple utility owners and city agencies.
This role is ideal for a Project Manager with a strong civil construction and field management background, ideally paired with experience working alongside electrical or utility contractors.
Role Overview
The Project Manager will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of public-works infrastructure projects, from preconstruction and planning through execution, closeout, and client coordination. The role is hands-on and field-driven, requiring close collaboration with superintendents, engineers, subcontractors, inspectors, and municipal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities.
Project Management & Delivery
- Manage multiple active public-works projects simultaneously
- Develop and maintain project schedules, phasing plans, and work sequencing
- Oversee subcontractors, suppliers, and internal field crews
- Lead coordination with city agencies, inspectors, and utility owners
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget
Civil & Utility Construction Focus
- Manage scopes including:
- Joint trench and underground utility installations
- Conduit, duct bank, and vault construction
- Roadway excavation, backfill, and restoration
- Utility coordination (power, communications, fiber, traffic systems)
- Coordinate work in active streets and dense urban environments
- Support constructability reviews and field problem-solving
Cost Control & Commercial Management
- Track budgets, production rates, and cost forecasts
- Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and pay applications
- Review invoices and support monthly cost reporting
- Assist with estimating and bid support for upcoming work
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in construction project management
- Strong background in civil construction, electrical engineering, public works, or utility infrastructure
- Experience managing street work, underground utilities, or joint trench projects preferred
- Experience working with electrical or utility contractors is a strong plus
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred
- Strong understanding of construction scheduling, cost control, and field operations
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and utility drawings
- Proficiency with MS Office; experience with Procore, Bluebeam, or similar tools preferred
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to be on-site regularly
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $120,000 – $160,000 DOE
- Eligible for annual performance bonuses
- (Flexibility for strong candidates starting around $110,000)
