About the Department

Position primarily provides Park Ranger type duties.  Position helps maintain County recreation and outdoor facilities, which include six boat landings, the Sheboygan Marsh and Campground, Park, and Tower, Interurban Trail, Old Plank Road Trail, Shoreland 400 Trail, Southside Utility Corridor Trail, CTH PP Linear Parkway and other future trail projects, Esslingen Park, Roy Sebald Sheboygan River Natural Area, Amsterdam Dunes, Johnsonville Fishing Area. 

Position Duties
  • Helps administer user-based fee system for County recreational facilities, which can include installing self-registration and payment stations, developing and printing forms and passes, patrolling recreation properties, issuing notices of violation, collecting fees from self-payment stations, replenishing registration forms, working with vendors to sell passes, and informing the public about recreation passes.  
  • Proactively inspects each relevant County recreational property on a schedule. 
  • Performs routine maintenance on County recreational facilities including cleaning, brushing, litter and waste pick-up, minor plumbing repairs, weed-eating, tree trimming, and mowing.  
  • Treatment of invasive species and other noxious weeds. 
  • Establishes long-term proactive regular maintenance schedules. 
  • Helps coordinates work of unpaid and paid volunteer groups that help to beautify and maintain County recreational facilities.  
  • Works a varied work schedule that will include weekends and evenings.   
  • Assists County Conservation staff field work when requested.  
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Some significant work experience in conservation, preferably relating to natural resources, and an associates’ degree or better in natural resources, planning, or a related field; or some other combination of work experience and education which demonstrates to a similar degree the ability to perform the essential requirements of the position at a high level.   
  • Wisconsin driver’s license is required.  Must have ability to drive County vehicles to various locations including pulling and unloading a trailer. 
  • General facility maintenance skills, including ability to use mowers, trimmers, and other power and hand tools.  
  • Ability to identify invasive species is desired. 
  • Basic mathematical abilities and ability to perform bookkeeping tasks is required.  
  • Prior experience and knowledge in natural ecosystems and conservation best management practices is desired.  
  • Basic knowledge of geographical information systems is required. 
  • Ability to operate GPS equipment is desired.   
  • Ability to work independently and good decision-making and problem-solving abilities are required.  
  • Ability to enforce relevant codes and ordinances and administer the collection of fees is required.  Must be able to work with others in sometimes confrontational situations.  
  • General computer knowledge including ability to use standard word processing and spreadsheet programs is required.  
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing, including ability to provide education to the public is required. 
Other Qualifications
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather, as well an in an office setting.  
  • Ability to work at least 8 hours at a time in a variety of sitting and standing postures, including substantial amounts of walking and driving, and frequent or occasional strenuous physical activities.   
  • Must be able to work at heights.  
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds is required.
