JOB SUMMARY
The job duties of the Operator IV (crusher) include the ability to use a variety of heavy equipment for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges. Winter maintenance activities will be required for this position.

Position Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties described below are indicative of what the Operator IV (crusher) might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County ordinances for the position of Operator IV or other designated equipment job descriptions. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned:
Operation Functions:
- Safely operate skid steer, loader, tractor loader, tractor backhoe, roller, excavator, bulldozer, motor grader and other assigned heavy construction equipment, machinery and tools for highway and bridge construction and maintenance, construction and maintenance materials handling, and sand and gravel operations.
- Communicate with other operators to coordinate materials handling and delivery.
- Coordinates efforts of work crew with contractors, communities, vendors, etc.
- Perform necessary maintenance and preventative maintenance to assigned machinery and equipment as directed.
- Respond to weather situations including snow and ice events, high water, washouts, and others as directed.
- Respond to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed.
- Perform general highway maintenance and related activities including snow and ice removal, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repairs, sign repairs, clearing brush, hauling materials, flagging traffic, roadway vegetation control, sweeping intersections, routing and sealing road cracks, culvert and drainage work, removing dead animals and trash and buildings and facilities maintenance repairs.
- Measures and places grade and alignment stakes using tapes, measuring devices and construction grade levels.
- Prepares sites for construction – installs string line; prepares site; tests site, etc.
- Operate loader and equipment for stock piling of road salt, sand, gravel, and patch material.
- Ensure all materials, vehicle and equipment are secured and are used in a safe and proper manner whether at job site or on Highway property.
- Work with supervisor and other employees to ensure that buried private utilities are properly located prior to excavation work. Expose buried utilities with hand tools and never with heavy equipment.
- Oversee and provide instructions to crew in supervisor’s absence.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Additional Essential Functions: (for Crusher Operator)
- Operates, maintains and repairs crushing plant components including feeders, conveyors, screening plant, primary, cone crusher, generator and button house. Assembles and disassembles plant components at assigned pit locations. Adjusts plant components as needed to efficiently produce specified aggregate gradations.
- Performs crushing spread routine annual maintenance and necessary repairs during winter months. Ensures crusher maintenance and repairs are completed will in advance of crushing season. Crusher work during winter months will have priority over non-storm winter maintenance such as post-storm cleanup.
- Orders oil, fuel, parts and supplies for the crushing plant.
- Records and maintains aggregate production records and plant records for use of fuel, parts and supplies.
- Produces and stockpiles aggregate materials to meet required County and State specifications.
- Communicates with truck drivers and other operators to coordinate materials handling and delivery.
- Handles, stockpiles, and loads plant materials in a manner that properly controls moisture and segregation.
- Properly maintains plant and mine site haul routes to keep routes smooth and minimize dust exposure to employees.
- Ensures compliance with MSHA regulations when working at active mine sites.
- Ensures plant and mine sites are secure prior to leaving.

Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience in heavy equipment operation on a routine basis with experience on an aggregate crushing operation preferred.
- Must be able to operate a variety of equipment relating to construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.
- Certifications as determined by the County based on the position.
- Road maintenance experience preferred.
- Class A CDL without restrictions E and L and N Tanker endorsement required within 6 months of hire date.
- MSHA certification for work in mines preferred. Employer-provided certification to be obtained within 12 months of hire.
- A cell phone is required.
Pre-employment and Post- Offer Testing:
- Successfully pass a post-employment-offer DOT drug screen, audiogram, physical exam and agility screening.
- Failure to pass these will result in the employment offer being revoked.
