The Supervising District Attorney Investigator plays a critical leadership role within the District Attorney’s Office, overseeing and conducting complex, sensitive, and specialized investigations related to felony, misdemeanor, juvenile, civil, and administrative cases. This position ensures the integrity and effectiveness of investigative operations by providing expert guidance, supervision, and support to assigned staff.

As an advanced-level sworn peace officer (Penal Code §830.1), the Supervising District Attorney Investigator is entrusted with managing high-level investigative activities, including tactical operations such as serving search and arrest warrants. The role requires exceptional judgment, investigative expertise, and leadership skills to coordinate objectives, establish timelines, and ensure compliance with legal and procedural standards.

Position Duties

  • Plans, directs, supervises, and conducts complex and/or specialized investigations related to a variety of criminal, civil, administrative, juvenile, including child and sexual abuse cases.
  • Issues assignments to subordinates for appropriate action; plans, oversees and evaluates the investigative activities of subordinate DA Investigators and other staff. Consults with the Chief and/or Assistant Chief District Attorney Investigator regarding discipline for subordinate staff.
  • Provides training to District Attorney Investigators and support staff as well as allied agency personnel regarding all facets of criminal investigations, including basic and advanced investigative techniques, sexual assault investigations, and evidence collection.
  • Locates and interviews defendants, law enforcement officials, witnesses, victims, and other involved parties; interviews defendants in custody in jails, juvenile hall, prisons, and mental facilities.
  • Analyzes and evaluates police, court and other records; prepares and serves subpoenas; writes search and arrest warrants.
  • Prepares criminal, administrative, juvenile, and civil cases and may testify before the Grand Jury and at Court proceedings. 
  • Collects, secures, verifies, and preserves documents, statements, testimony, evidence, photographs, and diagrams; transports evidence to crime labs for examination; photographs crime scenes; prepares court exhibits;seizes, labels and controls the inventory of evidence for court presentation.
  • Responds to crime scenes as directed; processes crime scene and analyzes evidence; identifies and collects evidence; maintains possession and control over evidence and secures the in accordance with state laws.
  • Gathers intelligence information concerning criminal activities through undercover operations, court-ordered electronic surveillance, stationary and mobile surveillance, radio, optical, and other technical equipment. 
  • Makes arrests and conducts raids and highly complex, sensitive, and significant investigations. 
  • Confers with city, county, state and federal law enforcement officers on criminal and administrative investigations.
  • Researches and locates witnesses; maintains a list of expert witnesses and Special Masters. 
  • Administers the California Witness Protection Program in maintaining the safety and security for protected persons.
  • Prepares a variety of investigative reports related to assigned cases; organizes and maintains caseload records.
  • Participates in federal, state and local task forces.
  • Prepares probable cause affidavits and criminal complaints; 
  • Prepares and obtains arrest and search warrants; serves warrants and makes arrests as authorized. 
  • Initiates and executes special legal procedures pertaining to court cases.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of recording equipment.
  • Assists in developing and implementing investigation policies.
  • May be responsible for range master duties.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • Equivalent to an associate’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field. (Substitution: Additional experience may substitute for the education on a year for year basis.) 


Experience:

  • Two (2) years of sworn law enforcement experience as an investigator equivalent to the classification of a District Attorney Investigator II with Kings County; or five (5) years of recent full-time law enforcement experience as defined in Penal Code, section 830.1 with one (1) year of supervisory experience in law enforcement.


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Licenses:

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.


Certifications:

  • Possession of a certificate of completion of Penal Code § 832 Course in Arrest, Search and Seizure issued by California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
  • Possession of an Intermediate or higher certification issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualify for security clearance through a background investigation including, but not limited to, a medical and psychological evaluation and fingerprint. Ability to qualify for deputization. Must be willing to work irregular hours including evenings, nights, and weekends as required. Ability to maintain peace officer qualifications as required by the State of California. 


Peace Officer Status Requirements:  Must meet minimum standards as described in California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031. Must meet physical standards established by the California Board of Corrections and any other pre-employment as well as ongoing peace officer requirements pursuant to federal, state, and local legislation.

Other Qualifications

All completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed. Depending upon the number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the examination process may include a screening committee (pass/fail) and/or written examination (pass/fail) and/or an oral examination (100%) which may include a written practical component to determine placement on the eligible list. Note: The top 40 written test scoring applicants with passing scores will be invited to participate in the oral examination interview process.
