Job Description
Performs mid-level FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) processing with minimal supervision. Reviews and interprets requests, determines tasking and search requirements, conducts or validates searches, applies exemptions, prepares releasable records, and ensures responses meet statutory and VA requirements. Provides technical accuracy, consistency, and support to junior staff while contributing to efficient workflow management and quality FOIA production.
Key responsibilities
- Review and interpret incoming FOIA requests; determine processing track, tasking, and search approach.
- Coordinate and validate searches for responsive records; compile and organize record sets for review.
- Apply redactions and exemptions accurately; produce draft response packages and summaries for Government review.
- Maintain real-time accuracy of the FOIA Request Tracker (status, dates, page counts, completion metrics, and justifications if applicable).
- Support senior analysts by escalating issues early (sensitivity risks, unusual circumstances, large volume requests, or data quality concerns).
Required
- Associate degree (or additional FOIA experience may substitute for degree requirements).
- 2+ years FOIA request processing experience within the last 36 months.
- Comprehensive knowledge of FOIA exemptions, timelines, fee categories, and request types.
- Ability to analyze and interpret FOIA requests and determine tasking and search requirements.
- Skilled in conducting or validating searches for responsible records.
- Proficiency with redaction software, documenting exemption decisions, and strong writing skills for professional correspondence and summaries.
- Must be local to DMV. Primarily remote with occasional on sites in DC.
- Must be able to obtain VA access (background investigation) and a PIV badge; must sign NDA.
Preferred
- FOIA-related training preferred.
- Experience with FOIA case management systems (any platform) and document review tools.
- Experience supporting rolling releases and large-volume cases (5,000+ pages).
What success looks like (first 60–90 days)
- Completes VA onboarding, system access, and required training; demonstrates command of the team’s SOPs and templates.
- Produces accurate work products in the eFOIA system and maintains real-time tracker accuracy for all assigned actions.
- Meets timeliness and quality expectations (clear, error-free correspondence; well-documented exemptions/redactions).
