Middle School Latin Teacher

This is a full-time, exempt position teaching Middle School Latin, reporting to the Head of Middle School. This position will begin on August 1, 2026. (Please note: While the World Language program at Shipley is robust, the number of sections of Latin may fluctuate in future years, as is the nature of a Language class, which possibly could turn this position from 1.0 to 0.8 employment.)

The ideal candidate will assume the responsibilities and possess the qualifications as indicated below:

Major Responsibilities

  • Teach four sections of Latin (in grades 6, 7, and 8)
  • Serve as a MS advisor (or teach a fifth Latin section)
  • Partake in community enrichment, such as co-curricular or extracurricular programs

Qualifications

The successful candidate must:

  • Have experience or demonstrated interest in teaching Latin to Middle School students;
  • Be willing to collaboratively design a curriculum that focuses on developing students' proficiency in reading comprehension and literary interpretation;
  • Seek to connect study of the ancient world to students' lives today, including their study of other academic subjects;
  • Be willing to experiment with new pedagogical approaches that contribute to student success;
  • Demonstrate the ability to execute lessons using authentic resources, a variety of classroom activities, and projects;
  • Have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and work to create a supportive atmosphere and rigorous academic program in which all students will thrive;
  • Be enthusiastic about working with Middle School students and committed to developing a thriving Latin program at that level, while also being open to opportunities to teach in the Upper School.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Maturity, collegiality, flexibility, humor;
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills;
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience (preferred);
  • BA in Latin or related field (advanced work in Classics not required but preferred).
