Job Description
Permanent Neonatology Physician / Practice Medical Director
Position Type: Permanent
Specialty: Physician - Neonatology
Shift: Varied clinical and administrative schedule based on NICU coverage; typically 12–24 hour neonatal coverage shifts
Position Details:
Patient Population: Critically ill and premature newborns requiring advanced Level IIIB NICU care
Setting: 60-bed Level IIIB NICU within a regional academic children's hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical care within a high-acuity Level IIIB NICU
- Serve as Practice Medical Director overseeing clinical operations and provider performance
- Lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
- Drive neonatal program development and clinical innovation
- Collaborate with hospital leadership and academic partners
- Teach and mentor medical students, pediatric residents, and family medicine residents
- Participate in Grand Rounds, simulation training, and educational programming
- Support scholarly activities, research projects, and academic initiatives
- Work collaboratively with pediatric subspecialists, maternal-fetal medicine, and pediatric surgery teams
Required Procedures:
- Advanced neonatal critical care management
- High-frequency ventilation
- Nitric oxide therapy
- NICU leadership and quality improvement oversight
Support Staff: Pediatric subspecialists, Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, Pediatric Surgery teams, residents, medical students, and multidisciplinary NICU staff
Days Per Month: Full-Time
On-Call/Weekends: Shared rotational neonatal call coverage with scheduled weekend NICU coverage
Requirements:
- Board Certified in Neonatology (Board Eligible candidates not accepted)
- MD or DO degree
- Virginia Medical License or willingness to obtain
- Leadership experience in NICU operations, clinical quality, or program development
- Neonatology experience required
- Most recent NPDB Self Query Report (within 30 days)
- DEA required prior to start date
- Must specify visa sponsorship requirements (J1/H1B); visa candidates not accepted
