About this job

Astera Health is looking for a .6 FTE Phlebotomist to join our team. The primary role for the Phlebotomist is to obtain samples, perform designated clinical laboratory tests.
 

This position is scheduled for 48 hours per bi-weekly pay period, primarily day shift rotating every 5th weekend and holiday. Responsibilities required, but not limited to:

  • Participates in routine laboratory work using personal protective equipment and abides by established safety/hazardous/infection control policies set forth—reports incidents as necessary.
  • Performs phlebotomy, DOT Urine drug collections, BAT testing, swab collections, and ECGs using personal protective equipment (PPE), safety devices, and standard precautions. Always follows proper patient identification protocols.
  • Performs various clerical duties as assigned such as entering outpatient orders, maintaining requisition files, and scanning results/requisitions to chart. Answer telephone, directs calls appropriately, and schedule appointments as needed.
  • Performs Therapeutic phlebotomies in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Transport specimens to lab as needed. Assist in the preparation of samples for analysis utilizing centrifuge and aliquoting. Prepare specimens for transport to reference lab.
  • Maintains compliance with established standards, i.e., federal, state, CAP, Joint Commission, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains compliance with established policies and procedures for safety and infection control to ensure the well-being of patient, family, and staff, i.e., patient safety, fire, disaster, and isolation.
  • Assists in investigation and follow-up, including corrective action, when necessary, in response to complaints and/or concerns from patients, families, staff, or providers.
  • Assists in reporting performance improvement activities within the department and interdepartmentally.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate inventory for patient care needs.
  • Assist in the orientation and onboarding of new laboratory team members.
  • Complete annual competencies as required by CAP and Joint Commission.

Education and Experience Required:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Phlebotomy experience preferred Or; an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and duties of the job as listed above.

Physical Requirements:

  • Medium Duty: exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 10 to 15 pounds of force frequently or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects (based on U.S. Department of Labor data). The following physical activities are required to perform this job:
  • Occasionally (up to 33% of work time): Standing, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, crouching, smelling, color vision.
  • Frequently (34-66% of work time): Walking, carrying, stooping, reaching, handling, fingering, talking, hearing, near acuity vision.
