The City of Steamboat Springs is hiring Seasonal Wildland Firefighters to join their team!

Pay Range: $31.82- $44.01

The position of Wildland Firefighter / Fuels Technician requires responding to, combating, extinguishing, and preventing wildland fires, as well as planning and performing fuels reduction and mitigation projects. The Wildland Firefighter / Fuels Technician will be required to learn and participate in performing tasks in emergency situations, which require strenuous exertion in difficult terrain and inclement weather. The job requires individuals to complete a wildland fire training program, learn streets, trails, fire roads, and water supply resources in the district, and operate fire apparatus under emergency situations in adverse weather and conditions. The Wildland Firefighter / Fuels Technician will also maintain equipment, supplies, and apparatus. Individuals in this position may deploy to out-of-district, State, and Federal wildland fires and natural disasters. Deployments may range from 14-25 days, and multiple deployments can occur. The Wildland Firefighter / Fuels Technician will also plan and implement in-district fire mitigation projects, perform structure triage assessments, conduct pre-planning, assist homeowners with Home Ignition Zone assessment and mitigation, and conduct fuel reduction and mitigation projects. This position is seasonal, hourly, non-exempt, without benefits. Anticipated seasonal position approximately May – October. Regardless of fire conditions, employees will work a 40-hour week and will work extensive overtime as needed during times of high wildland fire activity and during deployments.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Respond to, control, and extinguish wildland fires under emergency conditions.

  • Engage in fuels mitigation projects and wildfire defensible space projects.

  • Be available for deployment throughout the wildland fire season, with the potential to deploy in a variety of suppression apparatus and crew configurations.

  • Participate in wildland fire training, physical fitness training, and other relevant emergency services training.

  • Foster and maintain good working relationships with district residents and perform public education.

  • Ensure wildland apparatus, equipment, pumps, saws, and facilities are maintained in a constant state of readiness.

  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance on equipment and apparatus.

  • Perform structure triage and home ignition zone (HIZ) assessments and assist homeowners with developing mitigation plans.

  • Enter information in computer databases.

  • Perform apparatus and equipment maintenance checks in accordance with nationally recognized standards and/or department guidelines. Correct, or initiate correction, for all deficiencies found during maintenance checks.

  • Maintain records of equipment and apparatus maintenance.

  • Use all required safety equipment.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age.

  • Possess a Valid Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle driving record.

  • Successfully pass arduous Work Capacity Test (Hike 3 miles in under 46 minutes with a 45-pound pack)

The following certifications are preferred, training can be provided for the ideal candidate:

  • ICS 100 and NIMS 700 certification

  • Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) S-130/S-190 and L-180 certification

  • S-211, S-212, S-215 certification

  • Experience with a chainsaw and various wildland firefighting pumps and equipment.

  • Experience planning and completing mitigation projects, fuels pile construction / burning.

  • Experience in initial attack, extended attack and mop-up on wildland fires.
