Job Description of Full Time licensed Practical Nurse- School Nurse
The LPN School nurse works on the Orchard School Schedule: Mon-Friday 8:15am-3:45pm. Vacation Schedule as per Orchard School with approx. 8 weeks for vacation per year.
Job Overview of the Licensed Practical Nurse-School Nurse
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, administers nursing care to a diverse multicultural injured, convalescent, or disabled pediatric/adult patients; safely administers specific medications to patients.
Essential Duties of Licensed Practical Nurse- School Nurse
Key duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Understanding and supporting the agency’s mission & treatment philosophy:
- Treats all children, families and co-workers with respect & courtesy
- Demonstrates and models sensitivity to cultural background of children, families and co-workers
- Honors Sanctuary Commitments in all day to day activities
2. Provides nursing care to multiple pediatric residents
- Treats all children, families and co-workers with respect & courtesy
- Follows direction of Registered Nurse
- Accurate Physical Assessment of patients: vital signs
- Documentation of nurse findings in electronic medical record (Smartcare)
- Communicates with treatment team and parents as needed
- Identifies potential health and safety risks and communicates immediately with Registered Nurse and/or Chief Nurse to resolve issues/concerns immediately
3. Documentation
- Documents nurse findings in electronic medical record (Smartcare)
- Documents medication administration in medication administration record
- Completes Staff injury report per Agency guidelines
- Provides input into the Daily Health Center report as requested
- Completes other documentation as requested
4. Collegiality/Teamwork
- Works effectively with others

- Seeks and accepts help and direction when necessary
- Actively participates in team discussions and cooperates with follow through on plans
- Works collaboratively with others on special projects as assigned

Essential Qualifications of Licensed Practical Nurse- School Nurse
Key qualifications include:
- Licensed Practical Nurse, New York State Licensed Practical Nurse. Basic Life Support (BLS) current certification.
- Experience with pediatric nursing in a residential facility setting preferred.
- Description of general skill set: Professional demeanor; Strong oral and written communication skills,
- Specific skill set: Able to accept direction of a Registered Nurse. Perform nursing tasks within a framework; Strong medication administration skills. Strong nursing clinical skills: physical/mental/emotional assessment skills to gather measurements/data; collect signs and symptoms for the health care team.
- Experience with trauma preferred.
- Ability to adhere to our organization’s core values. Demonstrated emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stressors.
- Background in Pediatric and Family Nursing; Community Health; Patient-Family Relations (Customer Relations) preferred
- NYS Driver’s License

Physical/Travel Requirements of Licensed Practical Nurse-School Nurse
Ability to carry out these motions:

- Have Physical capacity to restrain or assist in the restraint of a child
- Candidates who are successfully hired, must participate in our Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training which concludes with a written and verbal test, and you will be evaluated on conducting a proper physical restraint.
