About the Role

We are seeking a Casual Phlebotomist to join our laboratory team. This position is ideal for individuals interested in healthcare who are flexible and available to work all shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. No prior experience is required—we provide comprehensive on-the-job training.

The Phlebotomist is responsible for accurate specimen collection from inpatients and outpatients. These specimens support critical laboratory testing used in patient diagnosis and treatment. The role also includes clerical, computer, and courier duties essential to laboratory operations and works under the supervision of Medical Technologists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collection using venipuncture, heel stick, and finger stick following proper patient identification procedures
  • Collect or instruct patients on collection of non-blood specimens as required
  • Provide courteous, professional service to patients and laboratory customers, including phone inquiries
  • Transport specimens from on-site and off-site locations following established safety guidelines
  • Enter and manage patient demographics and test orders accurately in laboratory information systems
  • Perform clerical duties including receiving, canceling, charging, and crediting tests
  • Follow all laboratory and hospital policies related to safety, quality control, quality assurance, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions
  • Demonstrate reliability, sound judgment, and the ability to prioritize workload
  • Report unusual or problematic incidents to technical or supervisory staff
  • Perform arterial punctures when required, following strict guidelines
  • Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials in a cost-effective manner
  • Assist with training and orientation of new staff, students, or residents as assigned

Schedule Requirement

  • Casual positions must be flexible and available to work all shifts

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred
  • Minimum of six (6) months of phlebotomy experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • Experience with laboratory information systems preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Phlebotomy Technician certification (PBT [ASCP]) or equivalent preferred
  • Act 31 Mandated Reporter Training required within 90 days of hire or transfer, with renewal as applicable
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting clearance, with renewal
  • Act 33 clearance, with renewal
  • Act 34 clearance, with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI clearance, with renewal
