SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of gas meters. Success in this position contributes to the provision of natural gas utilities for system customers.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a meter shop and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to natural gas, noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, hearing protection, or gloves. Must be able to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime.

JOB SUMMARY: This position performs skilled technical work assisting in the installation, repair, and maintenance of gas meters.
An incumbent in this position may be designated as GAS METER TECHNICIAN I or II, dependent upon the qualification, experience and knowledge of the selected applicant.
SALARY RANGE
$25.33 - $37.99 per hour (Gas Meter Technician I )
$26.59 - $39.89 per hour (Gas Meter Technician II )
Position DutiesGAS METER TECHNICIAN I:
- Install, remove and read residential and small commercial gas meters and pressure regulators; completes associated records.
- Test, repair and calibrate residential and small commercial gas meters and pressure regulators; completes associated records.
- Assist with the installation and removal of large commercial and industrial gas meters and pressure regulators.
- Clean and restock truck with appropriate materials, supplies, equipment, and tools.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
GAS METER TECHNICIAN II:
- Install, remove and read all types and classes of gas meters and pressure regulators; completes associated records.
- Test, repair and calibrate all types and classes of gas meters and pressure regulators; completes associated records.
- Investigate and resolve basic gas metering and billing issues.
- Assist with the design of large commercial and industrial meter installations; programs electronic gas measurement instruments.
- Assist with maintaining inventory of all gas meters, regulators and related equipment; cleans and restocks truck with appropriate materials, supplies, equipment, and tools.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
GAS METER TECHNICIAN I:
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Required to satisfactorily develop job knowledge and skills to be promoted to Gas Meter Technician II within 2 years of date of hire. Failure to satisfy this requirement will result in discharge from employment.
GAS METER TECHNICIAN II:
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with two to three years experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
