As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Birthing Center at UNC Health Appalachian, you will provide compassionate, high-quality care to mothers and newborns during one of the most important moments in their lives. You’ll work alongside physicians, midwives, and nursing colleagues to monitor patient progress, support families through the childbirth experience, and respond quickly to changing clinical conditions while ensuring patient safety and positive outcomes.

Compensation: Starting at $34.00 per hour or more, based on education, experience, certification, and internal equity
Status: Non-Exempt

What You’ll Do as a Birthing Center RN

Patient Care & Monitoring

  • Provide direct and indirect nursing care for patients in the Birthing Center.

  • Monitor maternal and fetal conditions, recognizing and responding to changes promptly.

  • Perform diagnostic tests, assessments, and interventions to support safe labor and delivery.

  • Provide compassionate support to patients and families during labor, delivery, and recovery.

Clinical Collaboration

  • Work closely with physicians, midwives, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated care.

  • Communicate patient progress and changes in condition to providers and care teams.

  • Assist in developing individualized care plans that support maternal and newborn health.

Patient Experience & Safety

  • Demonstrate compassion, empathy, and professionalism during critical and emotional situations.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and communication within the care team.

  • Follow organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and nursing practice standards.

  • Promote a positive and collaborative work environment that supports patient safety and staff well-being.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of Labor & Delivery registered nurse experience required

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of North Carolina

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) must be obtained within one (1) year of hire

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of nursing practice within licensure and hospital policies

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, and physicians

  • Competency in delivering safe and effective patient care

  • Commitment to exceptional customer service and patient-centered care

  • Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and clinical documentation systems

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, position, push, pull, and transfer patients weighing 50+ pounds

  • Manual dexterity and mobility for patient care activities

  • Frequent bending, squatting, twisting, and reaching

  • Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking during patient care

  • Near visual acuity for clinical tasks (20 inches or less)

Work Environment

  • Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids

  • Frequent exposure to medical equipment and clinical hazards

  • Requires flexibility for days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations

  • Extended standing and walking during shifts (8+ hours)

  • Occasional prolonged sitting for documentation and patient monitoring
