Part-Time Site Attendant (PRN)

About the DepartmentPosition Duties

• Operates landfill scale; weighs solid waste and calculates charges; and collects monies for disposal fees.
• Completes required paperwork pertaining to inspections and tire trailer.
• Receives and responds to inquiries; assists the general public with recycling materials and waste collection; and directs the general public to the proper location for disposing of materials.
• Sells tags; accounts for transactions on account reports; and prepares and makes bank deposits. 
• Cleans and monitors site so it is safe for County residents.
• Maintains the parking lot and grounds by sweeping shoveling and picking dropped and windblown debris. 
• Assists in landfill maintenance; opens and closes landfill; mows lawns; and performs weeding and sweeping.
• Assists drivers in the transfer of containers.
• Monitors loads for hazardous materials; and ensures safety procedures are followed.
• Provides coverage for the Cashier, as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Work Schedule
Work is scheduled on an as-needed basis during the operating hours of the County’s Collection Centers:

• Pisgah Forest: Monday–Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
• Calvert: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
• See Off: Monday–Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Shifts may vary depending on staffing needs at each site.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of the various materials recycled by the County.
• Knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in operation of a landfill and solid waste/recyclables collection site.
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Other Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or its equivalent.
 
Additional Requirements

• Valid North Carolina Driver's License
• Successful completion of SBI background check with required fingerprinting by Sheriff Office. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)
• Successful completion of Transylvania County standard background check. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)
• Successful completion of drug screening. (Instructions issued by HR at pre-boarding)

Physical Demands
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Work Environment
Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
