The Clinical Veterinarian provides and oversees preventive and supportive veterinary care for laboratory animals at Massachusetts General Hospital, in concert with other professional staff in CCM. This person also provides professional expertise in a collaborative research manner to investigators at MGH and elsewhere for animal model development and proper care and use of animal subjects. The position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products.
The Following Duties are required:
1) Provide service to and train research staff on various components of proper animal use, preparation of animals for surgery, anesthesia, surgical technique, post-operative monitoring, injections, and sample collection.
2) Advises staff on preventive health programs, such as quarantine evaluation of new arrivals, sentinel surveillance of rodent colonies, annual physical examinations and semi-annual tuberculin testing of non-human primates.
3) Perform routine clinical rounds in vivarium throughout MGH as well as site visits to animal vendors and extramural satellite facilities where MGH animals are maintained.
4) Provide weekend/holiday/after-hours coverage for veterinary emergencies, in concert with other professional staff in CCM.
5) Participate in establishing, implementing and monitoring policies and procedures involving laboratory animal care and use that is in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and current accreditation standards. Comply with and follow CCM and MGH policies and procedures.
6) Other duties as assigned.
