Job Summary
Physical Therapy Aides (includes Technician and Intern) serve as support personnel under the direct on premises supervision of the physical therapist. Aides perform designated tasks related to the management of the patient and the operation of the physical therapy department. Responsibilities include patient transport, preparation and cleaning of treatment areas, clerical tasks, and general assistance to patients, physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. Aides may assist pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with a variety of diagnoses and disabilities.
Responsibilities
Assists with Patient Care
Assists the PT and PTA with the provision of PT services within the constraints of skills level and legal guidelines (PT Practice Act). Competently provides PT services to all age populations served. Always follows treatment plan as prescribed by physical therapist. Recognizes changes in patient condition and notifies PT as appropriate. Is responsible for the completion of treatments scheduled during the shift in a timely manner, and requests assistance as needed. Performs treatment setup and applies therapeutic modalities per physical therapist's direction. Assists patients with non-treatment aspects of care within scope of practice (i.e. transporting, dressing).
Documentation and Communication
Communicates effectively with professionals and other health care team personnel. Accurately documents in the patient care notes and/or treatment flow sheet per policy and within legal guidelines. Effectively communicates verbal and telephone messages to appropriate department staff.
Non-Patient Care-Related Duties
Performs clerical activities as assigned (copying, filing answering phones, statistics, chart prep, etc.). Maintains department equipment and supplies, and assists with ordering as needed. Maintains the physical therapy department (equipment and facility) in a clean and orderly conditionthroughout the treatment day. Completes early-person/master list duties as assigned. Prepares and cleans whirlpools according to established policies and procedures. Observes infection control guidelines when cleaning whirlpool or other department equipment. Reports defective equipment immediately to appropriate personnel and labels equipment asdefective. Performs assigned tasks independently without prompting.
Performs Other Duties as Required
Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Completes all required competency assessments on time. Maintains required job knowledge (e.g. licensure and credentials, continuing education etc.). Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Heavy Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs with a maximum lifting of 100 lbs.
On-the-job training.
