Job Summary
The Director, Nursing Services - Orthopedic Inpatient Services provides strategic and operational leadership for Orthopedic Inpatient Nursing and designated Allied Health disciplines, with 24/7 accountability for patient care delivery, quality and patient safety, workforce performance, regulatory readiness, and financial stewardship. The Director ensures service-line governance and a functional quality management system that supports continuous readiness for DNV NIAHO accreditation surveys and sustained improvement across interdisciplinary care processes.
Responsibilities and Scope
* Leads, coaches, and develops nursing and allied health leaders (including subordinate leaders) in the ongoing, 24/7 operations of Orthopedic Inpatient Services; establishes clear accountability structures, escalation pathways, and leader standard work.
* Provides service-line oversight (per organizational design) for key multiprofessional allied health disciplines supporting orthopedic inpatient care (PT, OT, Speech), ensuring aligned workflows, staffing models, and performance expectations across the continuum of care.
* Maintains and leads a documented quality management system within the service line (process definition, performance measurement, corrective actions, and sustainment) consistent with DNV NIAHO expectations for continuous readiness and ISO-aligned continuous improvement.
* Partners with Quality and Risk Management regarding documentation of and response to patient safety events, including timely investigation, root cause analysis (RCA), implementation of corrective actions, and communication to staff; verifies effectiveness of changes and monitors for recurrence.
* Ensures competency-based orientation, ongoing competency validation, and performance management for nursing and allied health leaders and staff; ensures practice standards are maintained within professional scope of practice.
* Oversees policies, procedures, and documentation practices across Orthopedic Inpatient Services; ensures policies are current, implemented, and survey-ready; accountable to documented requirements for accreditation and regulatory authorities.
* Supports strategic financial goals through administration of the defined service-line budget; participates in budget planning and workforce forecasting; accountable to labor productivity metrics and appropriate allocation of nursing and allied health resources.
* Translates organizational and service-line strategy into measurable priorities; defines key performance metrics (quality, safety, experience, throughput, and finance) and drives improvement using structured problem-solving and change management.
* Leads interdisciplinary rounding and daily management systems to improve orthopedic outcomes (e.g., mobility progression, pain management, VTE prevention, falls prevention, skin integrity, discharge readiness), reducing variation and improving care transitions.
* Represents Orthopedic Inpatient Services in key organizational quality and governance forums (e.g., CQO/QMOC or equivalent committees), translating findings and expectations into service-line action plans and sustainment.
* Promotes a culture of safety, psychological safety, and high reliability; ensures leaders and staff can articulate service-line processes and demonstrate compliance in real time during DNV surveys and leadership interviews.
Qualifications
Required
* Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina or one of compact states.
* 5 years of professional nursing experience in an acute care setting.
* 2 years of experience in progressive leadership positions in an inpatient or service-line leadership role with interdisciplinary accountability.
* BLS Required.
Preferred
* Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related graduate degree.
* Nurse Executive Board Certification (NE-BC) as administered by the American Nursing Credentialing Association (ANCC) or equivalent nurse leader certification.
* Demonstrated experience leading a DNV/ISO-style quality management program (e.g., management review, corrective action, audit readiness) and/or orthopedic inpatient service-line operations.
