Job Description
Summary
We are currently representing a well-established civil engineering and infrastructure design firm seeking a Senior Civil Engineer with a minimum of 7+ years of experience in highway design, infrastructure improvements, and DOT projects. Based out of their Edison, NJ office, this individual will play a key leadership role in the planning, design, and delivery of transportation projects across New Jersey and the greater Northeast region.
This position is ideal for someone with strong technical capabilities in roadway/highway engineering, a deep understanding of DOT standards (NJDOT/NYSDOT), and the ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional design teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage highway and roadway design projects for public sector clients (NJDOT, counties, municipalities, etc.)
Prepare and review design plans, specifications, and cost estimates for infrastructure improvements
Oversee preparation of horizontal and vertical alignments, grading, drainage systems, and utility relocation plans
Manage project schedules, budgets, and client communications to ensure on-time delivery
Coordinate with internal teams and subconsultants including CAD designers, traffic engineers, and permitting specialists
Provide quality control for engineering documents and ensure compliance with agency standards
Mentor junior engineers and support staff, including assigning tasks and overseeing technical development
Support proposal development and business development efforts for highway/infrastructure pursuits
Attend project meetings, site visits, and coordinate with DOT and municipal reviewers as needed
Project Types Include:
Highway and roadway rehabilitation
Intersection improvements and traffic flow enhancements
Site planning and civil infrastructure for public sector developments
Streetscape and ADA compliance upgrades
Utility coordination and relocation
Stormwater and drainage systems
Occasional bridge approach work or coordination with structural teams
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Master’s preferred)
7+ years of experience in civil engineering focused on highway, infrastructure, and transportation projects
EIT or PE license preferred (New York or New Jersey preferred or ability to obtain)
Extensive knowledge of NJDOT, NYSDOT, or similar DOT agency standards and processes
Proficient with civil design software including MicroStation, InRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D
Familiarity with stormwater, permitting, and utility relocation
Strong leadership, coordination, and communication skills
Experience mentoring and managing junior staff is a plus
