Project Engineer – Mechanical


The Project Engineer – Mechanical serves as the subject matter expert for mechanical systems across all machine platforms. This role acts as the project manager for mechanical projects, both local and global, while also performing hands-on mechanical engineering work. The position supports production, sustainment, and new product development, and provides technical and professional mentorship to less experienced engineers.


Key Responsibilities


Project Management

  • Lead and manage mechanical design projects autonomously, meeting schedule and cost targets.
  • Drive projects through the standard Stage Gate / NPD process.
  • Provide clear project updates and summaries to leadership.
  • Maintain accurate, organized project documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

Mechanical Engineering (Individual Contributor)

  • Develop deep technical expertise in mechanical systems used across multiple machine platforms.
  • Design, develop, and improve mechanical assemblies and systems for new and existing equipment.
  • Define substitute and alternate parts for electromechanical systems.
  • Support sustainment and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Create and modify 3D models and 2D drawings using AutoCAD Inventor.
  • Maintain product lifecycle data within the AutoCAD PLM system.
  • Develop and maintain mechanical design tools, including part libraries and configurators.
  • Create work instructions and standard operating procedures.

Cross-Functional & Production Support

  • Provide mechanical support for in-process machines and production issues.
  • Support Order Engineering, Quality Engineering, Automation Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering with standard work and project efforts.
  • Participate in RCCA investigations and continuous improvement activities.
  • Respond to engineering requests through the Engineering Ticket System.

Mentorship

  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers, providing technical, project management, and professional development support as needed.

Requirements & Skills

  • Expert knowledge of mechanical engineering principles applied to industrial equipment.
  • Strong experience with project management and new product development processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in 3D and 2D CAD, including ASME and ANSI drafting standards.
  • Experience with PLM systems (AutoCAD PLM or equivalent) and ERP systems (VISUAL or similar).
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and apply metrology tools and procedures.
  • Experience with P&IDs, manufacturing engineering tools, quality processes, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing and Kaizen methodologies.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize production support, standard work, and project deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to two months per year.
