Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Construction Estimator with extensive hands-on experience in ground-up commercial projects to serve as an in-house domain expert. In this role, you will bridge the gap between traditional estimating and innovative technology by owning the review loop for our automated takeoff system. You will work directly with the founding engineering team to ensure our platform delivers the accuracy and detail required by professional estimators for real-world application.
- Lead the Domain Review Loop: Compare system-generated takeoffs against ground-truth data to identify missed or incorrect line items, ensuring the highest level of accuracy.
- Translate Construction Logic: Analyze plan sets and bid documents across all disciplines to help engineers understand complex assemblies (e.g., calculating precise material counts for specific wall types).
- Direct Engineering Collaboration: Partner with the founding engineering team in bi-weekly working sessions to translate construction nuances into technical problems they can solve.
- Quality Assurance & Judgment: Serve as the final authority on when the product is ready for real-world use based on your professional judgment and field experience.
- Identify Structural Gaps: Explain system "misses" in clear estimator terms, helping the team understand what the technology didn't "see" or understand in construction context.
- Strategic Prioritization: Lead bi-weekly reviews to walk the team through the biggest gaps and help decide which logic or geometry issues to fix first as new projects move through the system.
- Experience: Minimum 5+ years of professional experience in ground-up commercial estimating.
- Project Scope: Proven track record working across all disciplines on commercial projects valued at $10M or more.
- Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of construction assemblies, geometry, and quantity surveying (e.g., wood studs, drywall sheets, and structural components).
- Communication: Ability to clearly articulate construction "common sense" and technical requirements to a non-construction audience (engineers and product managers).
- Adaptability: Experience working in fast-moving environments and a willingness to iterate quickly on new ideas and processes.
- Detail Orientation: An exceptional eye for detail, with the ability to spot errors in complex bid documents and plan sets that others might miss.
