Job Description
We are seeking a CPD&D Laboratory Assistant to join our collaborative team supporting lab and greenhouse operations. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in aseptic technique and handling fungal cultures and a proven ability to execute routine laboratory tasks with accuracy, maintain equipment and facilities, and support plant material studies safely.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare media for research purposes and operate basic lab equipment.
- Clean and rinse glassware and equipment; sterilize equipment using an autoclave; prepare tubes and bottles with specified solutions.
- Set up tests and conduct routine tasks involving plant material, including placing plants into trays, tagging, marking for mobility tests, and staging on carts.
- Assist with inoculating and harvesting stock; prepare and handle inoculum for plant studies under sterile conditions.
- Safely handle and apply chemicals, including fungicides, following protocols for storage, labeling, and disposal.
- Wear and use PPE, including PAPR, in accordance with safety requirements and medical surveillance.
- Perform housekeeping: wash and move carts, cut flats into single pots, bag and weigh plant material for disposal, clean benches and floors, empty and replace waste containers, scrub growth and dew rooms, and stock supplies.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Aseptic technique expertise, including preparation, maintenance, and inoculation of fungal cultures.
- Knowledge of plant science and safety protocols to prevent contamination or exposure.
- Ability to work independently and in a team with consistent attendance and attention to detail.
- Experience preparing inoculum and handling, harvesting, and storing fungal cultures.
Preferred Skills:
- Educational background in Biology or Plant Pathology; 1–2 years of relevant experience may substitute for degree.
- Familiarity with greenhouse operations and growth room sanitation.
