Job Description
Position Overview
We’re seeking a seasoned Utility Pipe Layer / Equipment Operator with at least 5 years’ experience installing and repairing water and sewer mains and laterals. You’ll lead trenching, pipe‐laying, backfilling, and restoration—operating excavators, trench boxes, tapping machines, and related equipment—while upholding our rigorous safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Pipe Installation & Repair:
Excavate trenches and set 6″–18″ water/sewer mains (PVC, C900, ductile iron, copper, VCP) and laterals.
Install cleanouts, gate valves, meter boxes, and casing (16″ welded steel encasement).
Perform permanent and temporary repairs (Hymax clamps, corp stops, repair bands).
Equipment Operation:
Safely operate heavy machinery: 50,000 lb excavator, mini excavator, mini‐dozer, wheel loader, skid loader, tap machine, coring rig, trench box.
Execute live taps with tapping machines and coring boots; manage bypass pumping & confined‐space entry with air management systems per OSHA.
Grade & Alignment:
Read and set grades with laser levels or transit; install pipe at specified slopes (2% sewer falls, proper water grades).
Collaborate with survey control crews to verify invert elevations and alignments.
Site Restoration:
Backfill trenches with ABC or flowable fill; compact in lifts or with plate tampers.
Patch asphalt (saw‐cut or plate track), replace concrete curb, gutter, drive aprons, sidewalks.
Clear & grub, haul off debris or waste on‐site where required; assist in revegetation/silt‐fence installation.
Safety & Compliance:
Follow JGR’s safety program, maintain PPE, and conduct daily toolbox talks.
Monitor OSHA 200 logs, maintain low EMR, and report any incidents.
Ensure all work meets City/County/NCDOT standards and project specifications.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: 5+ years in water & sewer utility construction (mains & laterals)
Licenses/Certs:
NC CDL (Class B preferred) or ability to obtain
Confined Space Entry & Trench Safety training
OSHA 10‐hour certification (OSHA 30 preferred)
Skills:
Tap machine & coring equipment operation
Proficient with copper, ductile iron, C900 PVC, VCP pipe systems
Grade reading & trench layout
Heavy equipment operation & maintenance
