Estimator & Project Manager – Excavation / Site Development
About the Opportunity
A well-established and growing real estate development and construction firm in New Jersey is seeking a motivated Estimator & Project Manager to join its Excavation and Site Development Division.
This position is ideal for professionals who bring both technical estimating expertise and hands-on project management experience in earthwork, utilities, and site construction. You’ll be part of a company with an expanding portfolio of residential and commercial projects across the region.
Position Summary
The Estimator & Project Manager will oversee project estimating, budgeting, scheduling, and field coordination for excavation and sitework operations.
You’ll manage the full project lifecycle—from initial takeoff and bid through procurement, scheduling, and completion—ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Preconstruction
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for sitework, grading, utilities, and excavation.
- Review drawings, specifications, and site plans to determine project scope and production requirements.
- Develop and maintain accurate project budgets and historical cost databases.
- Work with management to analyze bid results, refine pricing, and forecast costs.
Project Management
- Plan and coordinate daily and weekly project activities with superintendents and field teams.
- Oversee project scheduling, subcontractor coordination, and material procurement.
- Monitor progress, production rates, and cost performance to ensure projects remain on track.
- Resolve site issues and proactively identify opportunities for improvement or savings.
- Ensure work meets quality, safety, and regulatory standards.
Vendor & Client Coordination
- Solicit and negotiate vendor and subcontractor pricing for materials and services.
- Manage vendor relationships to ensure on-time delivery and competitive pricing.
- Communicate regularly with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and management regarding project status and challenges.
Reporting & Cost Control
- Track actual vs. estimated costs to identify variances and maintain profitability.
- Provide management with regular reports on project progress, cost trends, and upcoming needs.
- Participate in post-project reviews to evaluate estimating accuracy and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in excavation, site development, or heavy civil construction.
- Proven background in estimating and project management within construction.
- Proficiency with estimating/takeoff software (Bluebeam, HeavyBid, or similar).
- Strong understanding of civil construction materials (aggregates, concrete, pipe, fill, asphalt, etc.).
- Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
